Barbara Johnson Burgess

WATER VALLEY – Mrs. Barbara Johnson Burgess died June 15, 2010 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.

    The funeral service was held at two o’clock in the afternoon Saturday, June 20, in The Mount Moriah District Association Building, Coffeeville, with Rev. Keith Howard officiating. Interment was in the Coffeeville Cemetery with Carlos Booker, Otto Covington, Carl Jones, Booker T. Leigh, Alfred Nicholson and Andrew Wilson as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Mardis Johnson, Claude Harris, Milton Hervey, Jimmie Miller, Larry Townes, and Lincoln Shields. Eddie (Skeeter) Robinson Funeral Home of Grenada had charge of arrangements.

    Born September 26, 1958, in Coffeeville, Mrs. Burgess was a daughter of Catherine Clark Johnson and the late Mardis E. Johnson, Sr. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Johnson Lawrence. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. William Brown. She graduated from Coffeeville High School in 1976 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Alcorn State University in 1981. She worked with the Mississippi Department of Human Services in Child Support Enforcement for 21 years in Yalobusha and Panola Counties.

    On June 12, 1982, she was united in holy matrimony to Lamar B. Burgess and to this union two children were born.

    She leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted husband of twenty-eight years, Lamar Burgess of Water Valley; a daughter, Kathryn Burgess and a son, Carnis Burgess, both of Oxford; her loving and devoted mother, Mrs. Catherine Johnson of Coffeeville; a sister, Betty Joyce Johnson James of Apple Valley, Minn.; a brother, Mardis E. Johnson (Mary) of St. Paul, Minn.; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

James Lawrence Hudson

WATER VALLEY – James Lawrence Hudson, 85, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford.

  The funeral service was held Monday, June 21, at two o’clock in the afternoon in Waller Funeral Home, Oxford, with Rev. James West and Rev. Hal Clark officiating. Burial followed in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.

    Born in Water Valley, Mr. Hudson was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a Top Turret Gunner on a B-24 Bomber, flying out of England for the Army Air Corp. He was retired from the U.S.D.A. Sedimentation Laboratory. Mr. Hudson was a deacon at Sylva Rena Baptist Church in Water Valley, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and church clerk. Mr. Hudson enjoyed gardening, raising watermelons, working with cattle, and woodworking.

    Survivors include his wife, Quay Barton Hudson, of Water Valley; his daughter, Gail Caldwell, and her husband, Jamie, of Oakland; two sons, Ricky Hudson, and his wife, Barbara, of Oxford, and Ronnie Hudson, and his wife, Judy, of Oxford; one brother, William H. Hudson of Water Valley; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

    Memorials in Mr. Hudson’s memory may be made to Sylva Rena Baptist Church, 17640 Highway 32, Water Valley, MS 38965.
