Bettie Jean Gooch
WATER VALLEY – Mrs. Bettie Jean Gooch died January 12, 2011.
Born July 5, 1931 in Water Valley, Mrs. Gooch was a daughter of the late Orris Lewis and Susie Skurr Lewis. She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age in Pine Grove East M.B. Church and was a faithful member until her health began to fail. She was married to the late Charlie Gooch. Jean worked as a short order cook at the Early Bird Cafe, the Mug and Cone, and on the block. Her specialities were hamburgers and fried chicken. She especially loved children, dogs, and cats.
The funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011, in Pine Grove East M.B. Church, with Rev. Amos Sims officiating. Rev. Edrick Garrison is pastor of the church. Burial was in the church cemetery with Leon Harris, Chris Pascal, Eric Riley, John Eddie Jones, Perry Gooch, and Derrick Gooch as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Cornelius (Jabo) Gooch, Lynn Harris, Toddrique Gooch, Joe Harris, and Ezra Hall. Eddie Robinson Funeral Home, Grenada, had charge of arrangements.
Survivors include: a daughter, Charlinda Gooch; one grandson, Toddrique Gooch; two great-grandchildren; two goddaughters, Callie Rose Woodard and Onia Sims; four sisters, Irma Gooch Water Valley, Mary Morgan of Oakland, and Ruth Campbell of Metcalf, Miss.; one brother-in-law, Cornelius Gooch; one aunt, Pauline Lewis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Jessica Smith, Florence Collins, Hattie Harris, Leatrice and Dorothy.
Ruthie Martin Joyner
WATER VALLEY – Ruthie Martin Joyner, age 79, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at her home in Water Valley.
Born July 7, 1931, Mrs. Joyner was a daughter of the late William and Clara Martin. She was a seamstress at Big Yank where she retired after 44 years of service. She loved her family and her grandchildren. Mrs. Joyner was an excellent cook and she enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and music. She attended First Christian Church in Water Valley.
Visitation was held Thursday, January 20, from noon until two o’clock in the afternoon in Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley. The funeral service followed the visitation with Bro. Hal Clark and Bro. David Freeman officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Water Valley, with Lance Clement, Chad Joyner, Blake Joyner, Donald Tutor, Tommy Martin, and Hack Martin serving as pallbearers.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly J. (Jerry) Davis of Water Valley; two sons, Mike Joyner of Amory and Joey (Amy) Joyner of Water Valley; a sister, Thelma Martin of Water Valley; six grandchildren, Andrea (Lance) Clement, Chad Joyner, Chancie Joyner, Chestin Joyner, and Logan Joyner; two step-grandchildren, Sarah Easley and Jamie Easley; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Joyner, and four brothers, Delane Martin, Dayton Martin, Johnny Martin, and Bobby Martin.

Cecilia Morgan McCain
POPE—Cecilia Morgan McCain, 47, of Pope died at her home January 18, 2011.
Born in Water Valley, she was a daughter of Samuel Edward McCain and the late Mary Elizabeth Allred McCain. She had worked as a professional painter. Cecila enjoyed four-wheeling, camping, boating, and spending time with family and friends. She has a special gift for drawing and poetry, and was a member of Taylor Baptist Church.
Services were held at two o’clock in the afternoon Saturday, January 22, in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Visitation was from noon until service time. Bro. Howard Beam and Bro. Randy Cox officiated. Burial was in Yocona Cemetery in Taylor, with Steve Shuffield, Alan Hunter, Brian Henning, Joel Person, Josh Parish, and Sidney Shoffner serving as pallbearers. Terri Dearborn was an honorary pallbearer.
Cecilia is survived by her life partner of 22 years, Vicki Reid of Pope; her father, Sam McCain of Pope; and one sister, Cynthia Marie McCain of Memphis.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Elizabeth McCain, and her brother, Clyde Lee McCain.

Catherine Black Ross
WATER VALLEY – Catherine Black Ross, age 80, of Water Valley died January 21, 2011, in Water Valley..
Born in Yalobusha County, Mrs. Ross was a daughter of the late Sol and Clara Williamson Black. Mrs. Ross was a poultry inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was a great cook who loved her family and her home. She enjoyed flower gardening and working in her yard. Catherine was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Yalobusha County.
Visitation was held Sunday, January 23, from 5 until 7 p.m. in Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley. Graveside services were held at ten o’clock in the morning Monday, January 24, in Oak Hill Cemetery, with Bro. Rick Glidewell officiating.
Survivors include her husband, Delbert Ross; one daughter, Brenda (Gary) Pinkerton; two sons, Rufus (Frances) Ross and Steve Ross; one sister, Hazel Pack, all of Water Valley; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: a daughter, Phyllis Baker; six sisters, Louise Dorris, Pauline Turpin, Lucille Morris, Sally Hensen, Frances Nichols, and Helen Leipstorff; three brothers, Alfred Dean Black, Rufus Leon Black, and Wallace Black; and a grandson, Joseph Lauren Cofer.
Jacalyn Diane Sills
OXFORD—Jacalyn Diane Sills, 56, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011, in Oxford.
Born in New Jersey, she had lived in the Oxford area for 30 years. She had been employed at Whirlpool Corporation before becoming disabled.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 27, at 3 p.m. at her home, located at 281 CR 323, Taylor.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer L. Sills, and a son, Joseph Shane Sills, both of Taylor.
