Dovie Champion Burke

WATER VALLEY—Dovie Champion Burke, age 106, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Yalobusha County Nursing Home at Water Valley.

  Born in Lafayette County, Mrs. Burke was a daughter of the late Andrew and Ida Lee Hendrick Champion. “Miss Dovie” loved flowers and enjoyed doing yard work. She was a life-long member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Water Valley. Mrs. Burke worked at Big Yank, where she retired after 30 years of service.

  A graveside service was held at eleven o’clock in the morning Friday, May 6, in Oak Hill Cemetery at Water Valley. Seven Oaks Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

  Survivors include her daughter, Donna Rakestraw of Water Valley; two sons, Kenneth Burk (Jean) of Collierville, Tenn., and Jody Burks of Water Valley; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Lee Vickery and Ethel Brassell, and one brother, Fred Champion.

Mildred K. Hewlett

WATER VALLEY—Mildred K. Hewlett, age 86, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, in Baptist Memorial Hospital at Oxford.

  Born in Yalobusha County, she was a daughter of the late Auester Campbell and Clara Conway Campbell. Mrs. Hewlett was a homemaker and she loved her family. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was an active member of Everdale M.B. Church, where she served on the kitchen committee for many years.

  The funeral service was held at one o’clock in the afternoon Friday, May 6, in Everdale M.B. Church at Water Valley. Seven Oaks Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

  Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Kuykendall of Water Valley; two sons, Rush Kuykendall (Dot) and Russell Kuykendall, both of Water Valley; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three daughters, Mary House, Geraldine Kuykendall and Annette Kuykendall; one son, Larry Kuykendall; and a sister, Julia Carter.

Martha Ann Pryor

WATER VALLEY—Martha Ann Pryor, age 63, of Water Valley died Sunday, May 8, 2011.

  Born in 1947 in Lafayette County, she was a daughter of the late Roy Lee and Lela Blaker Whiteside. Mrs. Pryor worked for  many years at Kellwood and SMW and was a homemaker, who had a sweet spirit and a radiant smile. She enjoyed racing and was a devoted fan of the Water Valley Blue Devil football team. She was a member of O’Tuckolofa Baptist Church.

  Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, in Oak Hill Cemetery at Water Valley, with Bro. Dan Dickerson officiating. Visitation was from 2 p.m. until service time. Seven Oaks Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

  Survivors include her husband, Roger Dale Pryor of Water Valley; one son, Steven Edward Pryor of Tupelo; three sisters, Betty Shelton of Red Banks, Pearl (Troy) Keel of Water Valley, and Mary Shaw of Coffeeville; and one brother, Larry (Peggy) Whiteside of Water Valley.

  Mrs. Pryor was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Kay Pryor, two sisters, Thelma Hensley and Mary Ann Whiteside, and four brothers, Boyd Lee Whiteside, Robert Lee Whiteside, Jimmy Earl Whiteside, and R. B. Whiteside.  Visit www.sevenoaksfuneralhome.com to offer online condolences.

Thelma Smith Williams

CHARLESTON—Thelma Smith Williams, age 81, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in Tallahatchie General Hospital at Charleston.

  Born December 16, 1929, Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late Joe H. and Carlie Hollingsworth Smith. Mrs. Williams loved reading her Bible and taking care of the Long Branch Cemetery, but her favorite pastime was her grandson, Jarrett.

  Visitation was held Thursday, May 5. The funeral service followed visitation at 2 p.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home, with Bro. John Price officiating.

  She is survived by her step-daughter, Peggy Jean Lewis of Merrit Island, Fla.; her son, Paul “Hoppy” Williams, and his wife, Cathy, of Charleston; a brother, Aaron G. Smith of Oakland; and her grandson, Jarrett Levi Williams.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Williams, Sr. in 1978.
