Mary Lou Mixon Roane
GRENADA–Mary Lou Mixon Roane, 97, of Grenada died Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Providence Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 12, at National Funeral Chapel. Burial followed in Wyatts Chapel Cemetery in Water Valley. Visitation was Saturday, Oct. 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. at National Funeral Home in Grenada.
Mrs. Roane was born on Oct. 4, 1916, and was the daughter of the late Elmer Harris Mixon and Mollie Augusta Osborn Mixon of Water Valley. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, L.E. Birdsong and Chapman Roane, along with seven siblings.
She was employed by Pennaco Hosiery Mill for 33 years. She was a graduate of O’Tuckalofa High School. Mary Lou was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Although she had no children of her own, she loved the little ones. She worked in the nursery at the church as long as she was able.
She had three particular natural talents. They were interior decorating, organizing and making things look pretty. She also enjoyed fashion designing. As a matter of fact, she designed and made some of her own clothes. Mary Lou loved to help make life better for others.
She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews as well as many friends. Memorials may be made to the building fund at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Robert Wayne Sumner
SARDIS—Robert Wayne Sumner, 53, died October 19, 2013, at his residence in Sardis. Mr. Sumner was a farmer.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home in Oxford has charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his daughter, Shea Homer of Batesville; three grandsons and one granddaughter; six sisters, Stephanie Davis of Water Valley, Cynthia Mills and Janet Morgan, both of Crowder, Vickey Melton and Francis Bundrum, both of Batesville, and Sandra Gentry of Oakland; three brothers, Joseph Davis of Charleston, Edward Davis, III of Tampa, Fla., and Amos Davis of Batesville; and his friend and care-giver, Anita Clements.
Reedy Guy Sanford
OXFORD—Reedy Guy Sanford, age 64, died October 13, 2013, at Oxford in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi.
The funeral service was held Saturday, October 19, at 12 noon in Eureka AME Zion Church at Courtland with Bro. Sherod Bryant officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. Serenity-Martin Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge of arrangements.
Born in Courtland, September 18, 1949, Mr.. Sanford was a son of John Arthur McFarland and the late Fannie Mae Thomas. He confessed a hope in Christ as his personal savior at an early age and united with Eureka AME Zion Church. He was employed eight years with the University of Mississippi.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Rosie Sanford of Oxford; one daughter, Yvonne Ford of Batesville; three step-daughters, Tammy Long of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lucinda Avant and Melissa (James) Leach, both of Oxford; three step-sons, Lee (Earnestine) Avant of Coffeeville, Keith Avant of Lithonia, Georgia, and Willie Lavelle Avant of Waterloo, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Louise Thomas Jones.
