Melvin Baker

CLEVELAND—Melvin Baker passed away April 19, 2015, in the Bolivar Med Long Term Care in Cleveland.

            Born in Cleveland, March 4, 1933, Mr. Baker was a son of the late John Harold and Salley Roberta Baker. He was a self-employed carpenter and owned his own business in Cleveland for 35-plus years. His wife, Billie Faye Baker, passed away June 28, 2014. She was an LPN and they were married August 11, 1950. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, animals, family get togethers and just being outside. He always had a joke to tell. He had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed life, and weekend trips to Point Pleasant Boat Ramp in Oakland.

            Visitation will be held in Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland April 22, at one o’clock and the service will begin at three p.m. Burial will be in the Cleveland Cemetery.

            Survivors include three children, David F. Baker (Debra) of Cleveland, Janice Weeks (W.D.) of Charleston, and Aaron Baker, Sr. of Water Valley; grandchildren, Daniel Baker, Dewayne Weeks, Paige Weeks Cockrell, Joseph Weeks, Aaron Baker, Jr., Karmen Baker Person (Ron), and Travis Baker; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Rizzo of Oak Grove, Calif. and Margie Williams of Cleveland.

            In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by, brothers, James Elton Baker, Bobby Edwards, Sr., and Glenn Baker; and sisters, Arlene Beech and Mavis Wooten.


Christine Holloway Adams Merritt

WATER VALLEY—Christine Holloway Adams Merritt, age 82, died Tuesday, April 14, 2015, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford.

            Born June 11, 1932, in Lambert, Mrs. Merritt was a daughter of the late Dalton and Lucy Washington Holloway. Christine was a homemaker and worked as a baby sitter until her retirement. She was a member of O’Tuckolofa Baptist Church in Water Valley and enjoyed cooking, quilting, and fishing. She was a devoted mother and grandmother; and enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, and friends.

            Visitation was held Thursday, April 16, in Seven Oaks Funeral Home at Water Valley. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 17, in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home with Bro. William Milam, Bro. Tommy Mitchell, and Bro. Michael Haas officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Liberty Cemetery in Calhoun County.

            Survivors include her daughters, Lessie Mae Watts of Oxford and JoAnn Potts of Water Valley; a son, David Adams (Amie) of Water Valley; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jesse Lester Adams, Sr.; her second husband, Newman Merritt; and a son, Jesse Lester Adams, Jr.
