Howard Dean Kilgore

CHARLESTON—Howard Dean Kilgore, age 62, died Monday, October 3, 2016, in Charleston.

Born March 17, 1954, he was a son of the late Henry Leonard and Elizabeth Jackson Kilgore. Dean was a Baptist, and at a young age he joined Cascilla Baptist Church. He worked most of his life in construction as a roofer and enjoyed fishing and gardening. Dean loved people, and had a way of encouraging others and making them smile. He had a kind, generous heart and would look for ways to help anyone. Dean knew what it was like to struggle in life and was grateful for every little thing. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Visitation was held Thursday, October 6, from 2-3 p.m. in Seven Oaks Funeral Home at Water Valley. The funeral service followed at 3 p.m. in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home with Bro. Dave Tribble and Bro. Roger Jackson officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery in Yalobusha County.

He is survived by his sister, Diane Crocker (Phil Walls) of Water Valley; three brothers, Leonard Kilgore (Brenda) of Water Valley, Cecil Wayne Winters (Brenda) and Ricky Charles Winters, all of Cascilla; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.


Brenda Lantrip Newman

WATER VALLEY—Brenda Lantrip Newman, age 59, died Thursday, October 6, 2016, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford.

Born January 21, 1957, in Water Valley, she was a daughter of the late Frank, Jr. and Margaret Earley Lantrip. Brenda was a 1975 graduate of Water Valley High School and a member of Sylva Rena Baptist Church. She was an avid Steelers fan and enjoyed taking trips with her best friend, Gayle, and their weekly jaunts to Krispy Kreme for donuts. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Brenda had a great personality, a generous heart, and will be  missed by all  who knew her.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 8, in the Turkey Creek Baptist Church Cemetery on Highway 32 between Water Valley and Bruce with Bro. Fred Eakes officiating. Elton Newman, William McCachren, David Johnson, Robbie Ashford, Aaron Dewberry, and Brandon Crocker were pallbearers. Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindi Newman of Water Valley; a son, Elton Newman (Acacia) of Water Valley; her step-daughter,  Michelle Dickerson (Glen) of Moss Point; her step-son, Michael Newman (Tricia) of Starkville; A sister, Sheila Butts (Billy) of Water Valley; four grandchildren, Olivia Newman Dewberry, Easton Lane Newman, Cambria Summer and Robbie Anderson; five step-grandchildren, Erin Livingston, Benjamin Newman, Mary Megan Dickerson, Seth Dickerson, and Brandt Dickerson; one step great-granddaughter; and two nieces.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Edward Lowry Newman, Jr.


Billy Gwinn Oates

OXFORD—Billy Gwinn Oates, Sr., 76, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford.

The funeral service was held Saturday, October 8, at two o’clock in the afternoon in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Hanks officiating. Burial followed in Abbeville Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday evening. October 7, from 4-7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Born to the late Marion Oliver and Elizabeth Edna Morrison Oates, Mr. Oates was a retired carpenter. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Ruth Shoffner Oates, and his brothers, Marion Oliver Oates, Jr. and Michael Oates.

Survivors include his daughters, LaCinda Gayle Griffin (James) of Water Valley and Terria Kay Morrow (Jerry) of Gore Springs; son, Billy G. Oates, Jr. (Tonia) of Smyrna, Tenn.; sisters, Charlene Valdes and Shirlene Valdes of Jamestown, Calif. and Faye Smith of Memphis; brothers, Jimmy Dale Oates of Pope and Johnny Carson Oates of Charleston; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
