Foster Music & Arts is proud to present a special New Orleans version of the monthly FMA Showcase on Feb. 25 for the Mardi Gras weekend. For this occasion, the FMA All-Stars, our nine-piece house band, have put together an entirely new repertoire of New Orleans classics and have even imported a couple of additional experts to round out the night.
Of course, the FMA All Stars’ own Casey Lipe, saxophonist extraordinaire, has more than enough experience playing New Orleans music to cover the whole night, but we’ve gone even further and enlisted Mark Yacovone on accordion and Daniel Spears on piano.
Mark Yacovone, or Yac as he is known to his friends, is the piano player you hear every week on Oxford’s live-radio institution Thacker Mountain Radio. As skilled as he is on piano and organ, Mark’s first instrument was the accordion and he sure hasn’t lost his touch. He’ll be adding some zydeco sounds to the set as well as occasionally playing Hammond organ on some of the funkier stuff.
Daniel Spears, our other guest for the evening, was the piano player at Taylor’s Big Truck Theater during its musical heyday, where he was well known for his rockin’ versions of Professor Longhair songs and other classic New Orleans R&B.
In addition to the closing set by the FMA house band (let’s call them the FMA Red Beans All Stars’ this time around), Mark Yacovone and Ricky Burkhead will open the evening with a short jazz set on Hammond organ and drums.
As a special treat local baker Michele Zerangue’s will have her famous king cakes for sale at our concession stand. Costumes welcome but not required and rest assured, we’ve got all the beads you’ll need.
The Old School Theater is a revitalized 250-seat school auditorium at 817 South Main Street in Water Valley, located inside the Melonvine Marketplace on the south side of town. Your GPS will lead you astray, so use a map.
All Foster Music & Arts shows at the Old School Theater are sponsored by The Caryl Company and the Melonvine Marketplace. Turnage Drug Store of Water Valley also supports all FMA shows with sponsorship and free ticket giveaways.
Showtime is 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show is general admission, tickets are $12 and they can be purchased at the door on the day of the show with cash or they can be purchased with a credit card online by going to fostermusicarts.com.
