Montroy Carothers

WATER VALLEY—Montroy Carothers, age 66, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017, at his home in Water Valley with his family by his side.

Born in Yalobusha County May 7, 1951, he was a son of the late J. C. Carothers and Bessie Mae Smalley and grew up in Yalobusha County, where he was a resident for most of his life. He worked at Motts and for the City of Water Valley. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time. Montroy was a member of Everdale Baptist Church of Water Valley.

The funeral service was held Friday, April 14, at one o’clock in the afternoon in Seven Oaks Funeral Home. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until service time. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Water Valley with Jerry Bishop, Lakendrith Bishop, Luther Cox, Marcus Woodard, Michael Carothers and Wesley Pomerlee as pallbearers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Carothers; a sister, Nellie Thompson; and three brothers, his twin, Monroe Carothers, J. C. Carothers, Jr., and Lonzell Carothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Daniels of Oxford; three sisters, Grace Bishop of Water Valley, Mary Watkins and Susan Bailey, both of Memphis; one brother, James Carothers; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.


Jimmy Luther Gross

WATER VALLEY—Jimmy Luther Gross, age 77, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017, in Yalobusha Nursing Home at Water Valley.

Born to the late Joseph Newton Gross and Willie Edward Dennis Gross in Panola County on February 10, 1940, he grew up doing various jobs and was always willing to  lend a helping hand to others. He was a man of little education, but he never  minding working, even if it was digging a grave by hand or working on an oil rig. He enjoyed teasing his family and he loved his daughter, Lynn, and his nieces and nephew. His siblings enjoyed their loving relationship.

Services were held Tuesday, April 18, at 2 p.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home at Water Valley, with Bro. Freddie Moorman and Bro. Virgil Nelson officiating. Visitation was from noon until service time. Burial was in Walker Cemetery with Terry McCullar, Tony Arbuckle, Dwight Arbuckle, Gerald Redwine, Kenny Arbuckle and Cameron LaCook as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Charlotte Thornton and Jeri McClome.

He is survived by his daughter, Stacy Lynn Gross Bumphis (Robert) of Tupelo; one sister, Pat Bynum of Water Valley; two brothers, Joseph William Gross of Garden Grove, Calif. and Joe Curtis Gross (Bobbie) of Courtland; one sister-in-law, Pearly Gross of East Peoria, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Wanda Bumphis, Peyton Bumphis, and Mischa Bumphis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Jeanette Redwine; and three brothers, John Thomas Gross, James Edward Gross, and Prentiss Wayne Gross.


Samuel “Sam” Price Hollowell

WATER VALLEY—Samuel “Sam” Price Hollowell, age 80, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, in Yalobusha General Nursing Home at Water Valley.

Born in Paris, Sam was a son of the late Leslie and Callie Seaton Hollowell. He was a member of O’Tuckolofa Baptist Church, near Water Valley. Sam was retired from the University of Mississippi, where he worked as a carpenter. He enjoyed building birdhouses, fishing, hunting, gardening, and truck farming. He had a big heart and loved sharing his vegetables and helping others in any way that he could.

Visitation was held from 12-2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, in Seven Oaks Funeral Home at Water Valley. The funeral service followed visitation in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home with Bro. Jerry King officiating. Burial was in the Anchor Baptist Church Cemetery.

Sam is survived by his wife of 60 years, Erma Dennis Hollowell of Water Valley; a sister, Lavelle Littlefield of Oxford; brothers, Shirley Hollowell (Debbie) of Taylor and George Hollowell of Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Joyce Bishop (Robert) and Dot Dennis, all of Water Valley;  brothers-in-law, Bill Dennis of Paris, Roger Dennis (Lynn) of Oxford, and Charles Dennis (Paulette) of Water Valley; and a host of  nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Sallie Hollowell Sledge and Wilma Hollowell Bratton; his brothers, Leslie Hollowell, Burlin Hollowell, and Donald G. Hollowell; and his brother-in-law, Curtis Dennis.


Johnny Reese Horton

WATER VALLEY—Johnny Reese Horton, age 55, passed away Friday, April 7, 2017, in St. Dominic Hospital at Jackson.

The funeral service was held Saturday, April 15, at noon in Rocky Branch M.B. Church in Charleston. Visitation was  held Friday, April 14, from 5-7 pm. in the Rocky Branch Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.Serenity Daniels Funeral Home, Water Valley was in charge of arrangements.


Robert Luster

WATER VALLEY—Robert Luster died April 9, 2017.

Born June 17, 1943, Robert was a son of the late Rosie Lee and Durell Harwell. As a young child he confessed to Christ and became a member of Rivers Hill Church of Christ. He is a retired employee of Holley Automotive and Al Williams Bail Bonding and Security.

He is survived by daughters, Janet Woodard (George) and Sandra Bradford (Hosea), both of Water Valley; two sisters, Opoline Kelly and Nellie Luster, both of Oxford; three brothers-in-law, Odell Benson of Memphis, Lee and Raymond Robinson, both of Racine, Wisc.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Pearson (Major) of Oxford and Annie Gooch of Water Valley; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cordia Luster; a brother, Sanford Luster; three sisters-in-law, Katherine Benson, Willie Watkins (Robert), and Mary Webb (Jessie); a brother-in-law, Y.C. Benson (Clara) and a great grandchild, Aaliyah Lasha Morris.

The funeral service was held Saturday, April 15, 2017, at noon in Spring Hill North M.B. Church, with Pastor Sammy Townes officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill North Cemetery, with Cory Booker, Keith Turner, Levert Hawkins, Ricky Pulley, Ken Mix and Tyrone Pearson as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Reggie Gooch, Raymond Benson, Eddie Benson, Tracy Pearson, Charles Henderson, and Luther Cox. Townes Funeral Home of Grenada had charge of arrangements.
