COFFEEVILLE – Supervisors spent the majority of their second monthly meeting last Wednesday interviewing applicants for purchasing clerk position. More than a dozen candidates attended the meeting at the Coffeeville courthouse and interviews were conducted individually behind closed doors in executive session. No decision was made at the meeting regarding the new hire to replace the previous clerk who was terminated.

The meeting reopened to the public around 11:30 and the remaining items on the agenda were handled in a half-hour and included:

• Discussed the ongoing cleanup on two tracts of property in the Water Valley Boat Landing Community previously deemed by supervisors to be in such a state of uncleanliness that they are a nuisance to the public health, safety and welfare of the community. As part of the finding, supervisors voted that the property must be cleaned up, a demand that was put in a board order, citing authority under Section 19-5-105 of Mississippi Code.

District 3 Supervisor Lee McMinn reported that one of the properties, located on Pat Drive in his district, has been cleaned up to the satisfaction of the neighboring property owners who had originally presented a petition to the county requesting the cleanup. McMinn added that a “good Samaritan” had assisted with the property owner clean up.

“Miraculously, they have made huge strides,” McMinn said about the cleanup effort, adding that his county crew hauled off a large pile of debris to assist.

After the update, the board voted the property was no longer a menace and no farther action is required.

“I do want to add for the record that this petition did the job,” McMinn said.

McMinn added that the second property on Pine Ridge Circle in the Boat Landing Community still needs work and he will get a updated price from an independent contractor to clean up the property. The contractor, Brandon Crocker, had previously submitted a bid for the job, but McMinn said some progress had been made on the property at Pine Ridge Circle and the price would be adjusted before the contract is executed and cleanup begins. The cost of the cleanup will be assessed to the tax bill of the property owner.

• Approved a handful of claims that were not ready for the July 5 meeting.

• Approved applications from Harrison Logging to exceed the posted weight limit on County Roads 141, 22 and 215 while hauling timber in districts One and Five.
