DES Will Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

Davidson Elementary School will celebrate National Red Ribbon Week October 23 – 31. The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA Agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free American.
The National Family Partnership is the sponsor of the National Red Ribbon Week celebration. They are helping citizens across the country to come together to keep children, families and communities safe, healthy and drug-free, through parent training, networking and sponsoring the National Red Ribbon Campaign.
A theme unifies each year’s campaign and helps to broadcast one message, creating a tipping point to change behavior.
DES has adopted this theme as well. This year’s theme is “Your Future is Key. So Stay Drug Free.”
More than 80 million young people and adults show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free life by wearing or displaying the red ribbon. DES will be a partner in this national campaign.
How will you, the community, celebrate Red Ribbon Week with us?
• Wear red ribbons and distribute them to your employees
• Place a red ribbon message in your advertisements and monthly statements
• Sponsor a school and/or classroom
• Identify and share local prevention intervention and treatment resources with your employees
• Display a basket of red ribbons in the waiting room lobby for patients and family members.
During RRW, our students will have fun dress up days. We will also have a door decorating contest, and our 4th – 6th graders can enter an essay contest. In addition, we will have speakers come to our school to encourage adopting a drug –free lifestyle.
Parents of our students can go to their Active Parent web site to review the colors/themes listed per day. Please encourage your child to participate.
DES encourages our community to join with us to support National Red Ribbon Week. Let’s “Red out” the valley in support of RRW!
If you would like more information on this, please contact DES at 662-473-1110 and ask for Karon Stanford, the school counselor.
