10 Years—November 1, 2007
In a Halloween Decorating Contest at David-son Elementary School’s Challenge Class, first place winners were: Ally Avant, 4th grade, Pop Art Division, for her pumpkin Super Fabulous; Shade Epes, 6th grader, Abstract Category, for Moody Hard; and Anna Williamson, 6th grade, Impression Division for her Starry, Starry Pumpkin.
A team from Itawamba spent a day looking around Water Valley several months ago and their assessment was presented to the public, a report that the Valley makes a pretty old impression on first time visitors.
In Jessie Gurner’s “Street Talk” Column she reported that good customer service is essential to making or breaking your business and finds that Turnage Drug Store was tops in this area.
Ten years ago the Valley was dealing with problems (some still plague us), in letters addressed to the editor. From Terry Allen comes, “Public land sales for projects not in our best interest.” From Clyde Herron, “Nowhere in scripture condemns strong drink.” From James Tribble, “More people have food problems than alcohol problems.” From Sissy and James Upchurch, “Help is needed with neighborhood nuisances.”
The Blue Devils lost to Carrollton’s J. Z. George by a score of 62-41.
20 Years—November 6, 1997
Senior Maid Demeka Smith, daughter of Mrs. Claudie Smith of Water Valley and Richard Smith of Coffeeville, was crowned Homecoming Queen at the Water Valley/Quitman County Game. The Blue Devils lost the game 48-22. Other members of the court included senior maids, Desha Anthony, Amanda York, and Katasha Rucker; junior maids, Bridget Rucker and Kelly Pullen; sophomore maids, Joeli Williamson; and Alice Jenkins.
Michael Strickland, Callie Rucker, Brenda Tedford, Roy House, Darren Price, and Derrick Price, members of Miss Amy Walley’s Class at the high school were taking on the task of maintaining the information sign at the school.
Linda Jamison, Shay Williamson, and Melanie Bishop, students at Northwest Mississippi Community College Allied Health Nurse’s Aide Program completed their course at Yalobusha County Nursing Home. Their instructors were Yvonne Shields and Tammy Golden.
30 years—November 5, 1987
Jill Terry, four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Terry, was among the many who stopped by Jack and Jessie Gurner’s studio to be photographed in their Halloween costumes. Jill was dressed as a clown.
Water Valley Police Chief J. D. Watson resigned and the City Board named Mike King to replace him.
The Water Valley High School Blue Devils came up with a break-even season by defeating the Coldwater Cougars, 20-8, Friday night.
In Gurner Photography’s ad for the week, featured were twin sons, Danny and Larry, of Mr. and Ms. Wayne Harris.
Newly elected officers of Water Valley High School DECA Club were: Will Vance, president; Greta Burgess, vice-president; Noel Holley, treasurer; David Johnson, secretary; Belinda Hollowell, parliamentarian; and Scott Heath, reporter. Mrs. Rosa Hill is the club sponsor.
40 Years—November 3, 1977
A production of “Peter Pan,” sponsored by the PTA, was presented by Water Valley Elementary School student. In a contest, students created posters to advertise the event. Winners were: first place, Melvin Burgess; second, Gary Burns; and third, Elvis Reynolds.
The Blue Devils were able to limit the Charleston Tigers to a meager 14 points, but unfortunately were unable to score themselves. It was a hard fought battle.
Ed’s Brain Storms column reported that Halloween casualties were few.
Meritorious service at Volkel AB, Netherlands has earned the second awarding of the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal for Staff Sergeant Samuel C. Person, son of Mrs. Thelma Person of Water Valley.
Yalobusha County Academy’s boy’s and girl’s basketball teams opened their season traveling to Mt. Pleasant Academy.
50 Years—November 2, 1967
Pictured at the Open House of Yalobusha Country Club were Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Perkins and son, Lawrence, with Binford “Snooky” Williams.
The Water Valley Blue Devils dropped to fourth place in the Chickasaw Conference after a 14-0 loss to the Horn Lake Eagles.
Participating in the PTA Halloween Carnival, Harriet Fair, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fair, and Wanda Cook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. “Junior” Cook, found bobbing for apples was not as easy as it looked. They were pictured on the front page trying their skill.
Ram Tool, after choosing Water Valley as a location for their plant, had started production.
Two Water Valley girls, Harriet Samuels, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fly, and Carlisle Throop, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Throop, were selected to be Junior Ushers at Mississippi State College for Women. Ushers serve as official hostesses at all M.S.C.W. functions.
Mrs. Turner Worsham hosted the October meeting of The Garden Club of Water Valley, which featured “Shell Gardens” of the members.
Miss Mildred Carpenter of Alexandria, Va., after spending the weekend wither parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Carpenter, was flying home.
60 Years—October 31, 1957
Mayor Stanley Perkins explained to Rotary Club members that the swimming pool and new city hall being built would not demand an additional tax levy.
The Garden Cub of Water Valley selected as one of their projects the beautification of Hwy. 7 from the intersection of Hwy.. 7 and 32 one mile south to the city limits, dubbing it “Mile of Beauty.” Chairing the project were Mrs. L. L. Mathis and Mrs. J. G. Carpenter.
U.S. Congressman Jamie Whitten was scheduled to speak at the Rotary Club.
State Representative Joe Bailey of Coffeeville spoke at the County Home Demon-stration Council meeting.
At the Merit Badge Show of Yalafa Scouts, Explorer Post 14 was the Blue Ribbon winner for their Plumbing Badge, and Cub Scout Pack 22 took first place with their Tribute to the Flag Booth.
The Water Valley High School Blue Devils, in their final game of the season, lost 14-12 to Olive Branch.
