Lewis Rufus Gray


COFFEEVILLE—Lewis Rufus Gray, Jr., of Coffeeville, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford. 

Born October 11, 1939, in Grenada County, Mr. Gray was a son of the late Lewis Rufus, Sr. and Margaret Bessie Vickery Gray. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Coffeeville and a retired corrections officer with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, in First Baptist Church at Coffeeville with Rev. Truman Scarborough and Rev. Craig Baker officiating. Interment followed in the Coffeeville Cemetery with Jamie Arbuckle, Christopher Gray, Michael Gray, Steven Kendall, Jason Nelson, and Josh Smith as pallbearers. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the church. McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service of Grenada was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Tina Evans of Coffeeville; two sons, William Lewis “Bill” Gray of Paris and Jonathan Wayne Gray (Stephanie) of Wiggins; three sisters, Rebecca McCullar (William) of Coffeeville, Carolyn McCormack (Jack) of Coffeeville, and Ellen Harper (Paul) of Canton, Ga.; four brothers, David Gray of Coffeeville, Larry Gray (Barbara) of Water Valley, Rodney Gray (Cheryl) of Conroy, Texas, and Donald Gray (Sherry) of Water Valley; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to  his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Delores Sanders Gray; one son, Michael Len Gray; and a grandson, Nathan Gray.
