Burgess Named Postmaster At Terry

Greta Burgess

TERRY – Greta Burgess has been named postmaster at the Terry Post Office, becoming the first African-American to fill this position.  

Greta’s postal career continues a family tradition and she considers herself following in her mom, Joyce Judson’s footsteps. Judson, now retired, served as postmaster of Taylor. Greta’s father, Norwood Burgess is a retired distribution clerk after working at the post office in Grenada. Her sister, Tamara Tucker, is the head window clerk at the Water Valley post office and a niece, Tierra Turner, is a RCA at the Coffeeville post office.

Greta started her postal career in Jackson as a casual clerk and she has worked in numerous positions at post offices across the state. She has been considered a Triple Crown winner, with experience in all three areas of the United States Postal Service: distribution, customer service and maintenance. Her accomplishments also include decreasing unscheduled leave and increasing revenue in prior positions.

Most recently, while working as OIC Postmaster in Brookhaven last year, the office was listed number one in the state in Breast Cancer Sales, compared to the previous year, after sales of the stamp increased from $200 to over $2,000 in 2017.

Greta is a 1988 graduate of Water Valley High School and a 1993 graduate of Delta State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Merchandising with a double minor in Business Administration and Art. 


Greta’s Career History

• Working in Jackson  – she started as a casual clerk. After three-and-a-half months she became a career mail handler. During this phase of her career she served as Shop Stewart and QWL coordinator. She also served as chairperson for the Diversity Committee. Next she acted as supervisor, distribution operations in every plant operation from 010 to automation, SPBS, Parcel Post and elevated to FSM 100 to number 1 in the country in thru put during Tour 1 operations.

• From there she was detailed as Maintenance Mechanic and then she received the craft position as Maintenance Mechanic. This entailed maintaining DBCS, FSM 100 and even rewiring a compressor that was destined for Grenada P & DC. As well as working on the team to relocate DBCS from Meridian to Jackson. 

• Next she acted as Supervisor, Customer Services; Delta Station.  Within four months she was promoted to this same position.  As EAS Leadership Development participant and even before she became a member of ELD Team All-Stars, she accepted every upper management request for her to fill a detail.

• 2014 as (A) Station manager of EAS 20 Candlestick Station she oversaw a special route inspection.

• 2015 Supervisor, Customer Services of North Station which included city carrier performance, attendance and all retail operations including stamp stock.

• 2016-2017 (A) Postmaster of EAS 20 Florence and Supervisor simultaneously with 4 RMPO’S. During this time she decreased the unscheduled leave and continued to increase revenue through stamp sales and Rural Reach.

• 2017 OIC Postmaster EAS 21 in Brookhaven. 

• 2017 OIC Postmaster EAS 18 in Terry.

Greta’s accomplishments also include receiving Yellow Belt training and completion of a Kaizon toward Yellow Belt certification. She has also been instrumental in the F4 team serving in Grenada, Meridian and a town near you.
