Joseph Louis Black

LOS ANGELES, CALIF.—Joseph Louis Black aka “Big Joe,” age 82, died at his home in Los Angeles, Calif. on July 9, 2018.

The funeral service was held in Mallalieu United Methodist Church in Ruleville, July 21, at 11 a.m. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service and Serenity-Daniels Funeral Home of Water Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Born in Charleston,, “Big Joe” was a son of the late James L. Black and Ms. Jimmie L. McKinley.

Survivors include one son, Joe F. Black of St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Jada Black of Long Beach, Calif.; two brothers, James Charles Black and William Black, both of Ruleville; four sisters, Barbara Johnson Smith of Los Angeles, Calif., Nina Black of St. Paul, Minn., Fay Black and Patricia Black, both of Ruleville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Vernon Douglas Knight

CANTON—Vernon Douglas Knight, 65, died Sunday, July 22, 2018, at his home.

Visitation was held Tuesday, July 24, in Breeland Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m., prior to the chapel service. Burial was in the Canton Cemetery. 

A native of Coahoma County, Doug had lived in Canton since 1967. He liked collecting old cars, knives and going to auctions with his wife, Kay. He was a member of Center Terrace Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Moore and B. W. Knight; a brother, James Washington Knight; and sisters, Sandra Gail Knight and Shirley Ann Huggins.

Survivors include his wife, Kay White Knight of Canton; his canine companion, Bella; a daughter, Teresa Dianne Cross of Canton; brothers, Larry Dean Knight of Jackson and Steve Allen Knight (Donita) of Canton; sisters, Mary Frances Davis (Billy) of Richland and Janie Lunsford of Brookwood, Ala.; grandchildren, Sumerlyn Ann Rodgers (Josh) and Brittany Paige Tucker (Anthony); three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Doy Lindred Palmer

McCOMB—Doy Lindred Palmer passed away in his sleep on June 9, 2018.

  Born August 31, 1936, in Paris, he was a son of the late Roy and Effie Babb Palmer. He grew up  on a farm in Paris. After graduating from Chamberlain Hunt Academy in 1955, he joined the US Air Force and served around the globe for six years, being honorably discharged in 1962 at the Air Force Station in Corvallis,  Oregon. There he met Helen Smith and they were wed in 1965. After moving to California for  brief period, Boulder, Colo. was home for 12 years. 

Sons, Eric and Kyle were born there. Boulder was his favorite place to live as it offered ample hunting and fishing and other outdoor activities for his young boys. He worked for the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Doy retired from Civil Service in Tucson, Ariz. in 1985, where the family had moved to in 1979. In 1985, he moved to McComb, where he worked with his brother, Toy Louis Palmer. He graduated from the  University of Southern Mississippi in 1990, majoring in Communications and Realty. Doy would retire a second time as a realtor in 2016.

He had a passion for sports, hunting and watching westerns. He had a gift of gab, never met a stranger and was not one to shy away from sharing his opinion. Doy provided  unyielding love and encouragement to his sons and grandchildren, encouraging them to aim high, and to  know that there is NO QUIT in Palmer!

He enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing, golf, traveling, and watching sports and classic American westerns. Above all else he loved spending time with Laverne Phelan, being with his friends, and visiting with his family.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, July 27, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. in the Hartman-Jones Funeral Home in McComb, with a memorial service immediately following. Doy will be laid to rest next to his parents and brother in the Paris Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, July 28, at 10 a.m.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Toy Palmer, and a sister, Katherine Palmer Parsons.

Survivors include his two sons, Kyle Palmer (Michele) of Burgettstown, Penn. and Eric Palmer (Shawna) of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jordan, Hailey, Jenna, Ryan, and Carley; and his companion of 27 years, Ms. Laverne Phelan of Brookhaven.
