John Thomas Hill

COFFEEVILLE– John Thomas Hill, 69, passed away December 10, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born January 18, 1949 in Calhoun County to  Luster Alvin Hill and Ruby Pearl Hill. He was a farmer, diesel mechanic and worked in the maintenance department for Yalobusha County for over 17 years. 

John was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Skuna Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Skuna Deer Hunting Club. He loved the outdoors, gardening, hunting and sharing with others.

John is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Marie Landreth Hill of Coffeeville; a son, Jeremy Trent (ReaDena) Hill of Hernando; a daughter, Jennifer Hill (Daniel) Brooks of Grenada; brothers, Gene Hill of Coffeeville, Earl Hill of Rossville Tenn. and Roy Hill of Hamilton; sisters, Meril Hill Green of Calhoun City, Lucille Potts of Paris, Louise Buchannan of Bruce, Pat Melton of Bruce, Margaret Dye of Calhoun City, Kaye Hill of Bruce and Diane Glover of Perkins, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Ashlyn Hill, Laney Hill and Preston Brooks.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances Marie Hill Barefield. 

Visitation was held Thursday, December 13, at New Hope Baptist Church from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services followed on Friday, December 14, at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Bro. Craig Baker and Bro. Billy Hill officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. 

Michael Eugene Quarles

COFFEEVILLE—Michael Eugene Quarles, age 58, of Coffeeville died peacefully Saturday, December 15, 2018, in his home.

Born February 9, 1960,  in Chicago, he was a son of the late Alvin and Annie Ruth Quarles. Michael worked for  himself as a small engine repair man. He enjoyed cooking, watching Gunsmoke, but nothing compared to the love he had for  his family. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Coffeeville.

Visitation was held Tuesday, December 18, in Calvary Baptist Church at Coffeeville from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The funeral service began at 1 p.m., with Bro. Elbert McKnight officiating. Burial was in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, with Michael (Bo) Quarles, Joe Clendenon, Doug Nichols, John Nichols, Joe Hill, Larry Holloway, Jim Caulder, Hunter Guy and Jimmy Smith as pallbearers. Seven Oaks Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years,Dorothy Quarles of Coffeville; two daughters, Christine Clendenon (Joe) and Deanna Quarles; one son, Michael Quarles; two grandchildren, all of Coffeeville; two sisters, Debbie Fetzgerald of Brandon and Teresa Tillman (Clarence) of Poplarville. Along with his parents, Michael was preceded in death by two brothers, Terry Quarles and Thomas Quarles.

Russell Owens

CHICAGO—Russell Owens, age 85, passed away at 3:10 a.m. December 1, 2018, in Mercy Hospital at Chicago, Ill.

Born May 22, 1930, he was a son of the late Mrs. Annie C. Owens and Mr. Fred Owens of Water Valley.

The funeral service was held December 4, in Keith Funeral Home at Chicago. He was cremated at his request.

Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Gabriel of Oak Park, Ill. and Delores McCroy of Meridian; two sons, Milton Owens and James Owens, both of Chicago; three sisters, Annie B. Owens and Gertrude Owens, both of Water Valley, and Margaret Johnson of Oxford; a special niece and care taker, Pearl H. Moore of Homewood, Ill.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Russell Owens, Jr;  four sisters; and four brothers.
