Benton Frank Barrett

GRENADA—Benton Frank Barrett, age 81, of Grenada died Thursday, October 24, 2019, in his home surrounded by family.

Born February 27, 1938, in Bruce, he was a son of the late Wilton Benton and Jessie Lee Goforth Barrett. After his service to our country in the United States Air Force, he worked his way to becoming a captain on a river boat in the inland waterways. His joys were many, including reading, hunting, fishing, coin collecting, knives, and firearms. But nothing meant more to him than his family. He was a member of Enid Baptist Church.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 27, in the Pittsboro Cemetery at Pittsboro with Bro. Rickey Harris officiating. Nathan Jones, Joseph Fewell, John Barrett, Wes Ballard, Daniel Ballard and Bubba Chaney were pallbearers. Seven Oaks Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

Survivors include four sons, David Barrett (Doretta) of Chicago, Felix Shipp (Brenda) of Grenada, Daniel Barrett of Hernando and Jason Barrett (Shanon) of Starkville; two daughters, Tina Finger (John) of Hernando, and Patricia Fewell of Scobey; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents, Mr. Barrett was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie Nell Barrett.

 

Linda Louise Cobern

WATER VALLEY—Linda Louise Cobern age 57, died Wednesday, October 23, 2019, in Baptist Memorial Hospital at Oxford.

Born August 23, 1962, in Water Valley, Linda was a daughter of the late James and Mary Lee Crocker Melton. She worked the majority of her career doing factory work. Linda enjoyed many things – bingo, fishing, and riding four wheelers –but her heart was always pointed toward helping others. She was especially devoted to her volunteer work with the O’Tuck Fire Department and ambulance service. She has a membership at Jumpers Chapel, but had more recently attended O’Tuck Baptist Church.

Visitation was held Sunday, October 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Gardiner Room of Seven Oaks Funeral Home. The service began at 1 p.m. Monday, October 28, in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home with Bro. Dan Dickerson officiating. Burial was in Goshen Cemetery at Coffeeville with Henry Simmons, Drew Kirk, Glen Melton, Sam Melton, Curtis Camp and Eddie Kirk as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Paxton Mullen, Quay Peacock, Butch Jones, and Robert (Boss) Crocker.

Linda is survived by her husband of 40 years, Terry Cobern of Water Valley; one son, Chris Cobern of Water Valley; one daughter, Mary Lee Melton of Coffeeville; three brothers, James Melton of Ocala, Fla., Glen Melton (Charlotte) of Coffeeville, and Andrew Melton of Gore Springs; two sisters, Mary Parker (Patrick), and Betty Kirk (Drew), all of Water Valley; two grandchildren, Shannon Simmons, and Henry Simmons; and one great-grandchild, Chevy Simmons.

Along with her parents, Linda was preceded in death by one grandchild, Shayanna Simmons.

 

Mary Katherine Smith

JONESBORO, ARK.—Mary Katherine Smith, 77, passed away Friday, October 18, 2019, in St. Bernards Medical Center.

Born December 31, 1941, in Oxford, Mary Katherine was a daughter of the late William and Opal Nail Abernethy. She retired from the Arkansas Department of Human Services after 25 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Smith, and a brother, Billy Abernethy.

Survivors include two daughters, Melanie Dennis and Shannon Smith, both of Jonesboro; four grandchildren, Kyle Metcalf, Austin Metcalf, Makayla Kemp, and Devon Kemp; four sisters, Jane Michelletti of Paris, Rose Walker of Elkmont, Ala., Linda Abernethy of Water Valley, and Nancy Abernethy of Franklin, Tenn.; a brother, John Abernethy (Sue Ellen); a sister-in-law, Linda Gaither (Dwayne) and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 24, in Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home, with David Mote officiating. Interment followed at Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until service time in the funeral home.
