Florence L. Campbell Shaw Barr

ST. LOUIS, MO—Florence L. Campbell Shaw Barr, age 83, of St. Louis, Missouri, died June 12, 2020, in her home.

The funeral service was held June 20, in Greater Sanders Chapel M.B. Church at Water Valley. Visitation was held Friday, June 19, from 3 to 6 p.m. in Serenity Daniels Funeral Home at Water Valley. Interment was in Pine Grove East M.B. Church Cemetery, with Serenity-Daniels Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Florence was the fifth child born to the union of R. V. Campbell and Alberta Rice Campbell in Coffeeville. She was educated in the Coffeeville School System. She accepted Christ at an early age and united with Bethlehem M.B. Church under the pastorate of Rev. W. M. Brown. Florence met the love of her life, Cefus Shaw, Sr., and was united in holy matrimony on April 4, 1953. God blessed this union with seven children. The family relocated to New Orleans and years later returned to Coffeeville. Florence eventually found employment with Holley Carburetor, now known as BorgWarner in Water Valley and the family decided to  move to Water Valley to be near her job. Florence united with Everdale M.B. Church, under the pastorate of Rev. Larry Hervey. After 20 years with the company she retired. During her residence in Water Valley, she met and married Edgar Barr.

She transitioned to her heavenly mansion in the early morning of Friday, June 12, in Bellefountaine, Mo, where she had resided since 2017 with her daughter, Carrie, and son-in-law, Samuel. Left to cherish her memory are: one daughter, Carrie (Samuel) Whiteside of St. Louis; two sons, Cefus Shaw, Jr. and Brian Shaw, both of Water Valley; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

 

James Cason

WATER VALLEY—James Cason, age 64, transitioned on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at his residence in Water Valley.

Burial took place Friday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. in Orwood Cemetery at  Taylor. Serenity-Daniels Funeral Home of Water Valley was in charge of arrangements.

 

Helen Scrivner Cox

OXFORD—Helen (Nell) Scrivner Cox was reunited with her family in heaven on June 21, 2020.

Nell was born in her beloved Mississippi Delta in Sunflower County November 6, 1927. She was the daughter of  Maifred Holloway Scrivner and she grew up in Linn. She was the last of 10 children to join the Scrivner heavenly reunion. She was preceded in death by sisters, Effie Baker, Opal Mixon, Chris Banks, and Faye Leamond; as well as brothers Rural Scrivner, Buford Scrivner, Alfred Scrivner, Hal Scrivner and Morris Scrivner. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Vonda Scrivner.

Nell loved her family most. She was married to her Purple Heart veteran and firefighter husband, C. W. Cox, who preceded her in death, for 62 years

She is survived by daughter, Pam Franck (Roger); two grandsons that she adored, Ryne Bankston and Reid Bankston; and her newest  light of her life, great-grandson, Daniel Bankston. Aunt Nell will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved like her children.

She was a lifetime member of the Mississippi Firefighters’ Ladies Auxiliary, where she served in many positions. She loved the many friends that she made throughout the years and being a “Golden Girl” with her sisters.

When Nell and C. W. retired, they moved from Greenville to their 3C Ranch at Water Valley. Even though “retired,” Nell enjoyed keeping busy with several jobs in the community, including working in the Yalobusha County Circuit Clerks’ Office until she moved to Oxford. While in Water Valley, she was an Ambassador and a member of the Garden Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Water Valley and attended Oxford-University United Methodist Church while living in Oxford.

Nell loved life! She enjoyed traveling, bingo, horse racing, laughter and her Ole Miss Rebels. She had many fun football memories with her dear friends, Jesse and Mildred Franklin.

A small family service will be held  in Linn Methodist Church on June 24, at 2 p.m., with burial following in the Linn Methodist Church Cemetery.

 

Jerry Lee Ellis

COFFEEVILLE—Jerry Lee Ellis, 81, of Coffeeville, passed away Monday, June 15, 2020, in the Mississippi State Veteran’s Home at Oxford.

Born January 22, 1939, in Columbia County, Fla., he was a son of J. L. and Avis Dukes Ellis. Jerry spent most of his working life as manager in various industries and ultimately retired from Nicholson/Cooper Steel. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenville and honorably served our country in the U.S. Air Force where he was a jet mechanic. An avid motorcycle rider, he was an active member of the CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association) and the Gold Wing Riders Club in Greenville.

A time of remembrance was held from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada. Additional services and burial will be in the Elzey Chapel Cemetery in Lake Butler, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Vest Ellis; one daughter, Jacqueline (Jackie) Ellis of Greenville; a son, James Ellis of Columbus (Cecilia); two step-sons, Robert Vest (Missy) of Greenville and Douglas Vest of Oak Grove, La.; one brother, Jerrell Ellis (Clarice) of Lake Butler, Fla.; five grandchildren, Mathew, Stephanie, Carmen, Ashley, and Tiffany; and a host of great-grandchildren.

 

Lynda Frances Gordon 

COFFEEVILLE—Lynda Frances Gordon, age 79, of Coffeeville died Thursday, June 18, 2020, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford.

  Born December 18, 1940, in Water Valley, Lynda was a daughter of the late Woodrow Donaldson and  Edith Etoil Cofer. After leaving school, she and Robert Gordon married and began their life long journey together. Lynda began her career at Ben Franklin Five and Dime Store and later, in 1997, went to work for Holley Carburetor. After retiring, she and Robert sold everything, bought a camper, and began an adventure, traveling all over North America. Lynda enjoyed crocheting, reading John Grisham novels and shopping. She and Robert were founding members of Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Water Valley.

Visitation was held Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. until noon in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home. The funeral service followed in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home  with Bro. Fred Eakes officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include her two sons, Scotty Gordon (Tammy) of Coffeeville, and Jerry Gordon (Sabrina) of Cleveland, Ga.; five grandchildren, Tina Gordon, Devin Gordon, Jerry Gordon, Jr., Steven Gordon, and Blake Gordon; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, Lynda was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Robert Gordon, and one grandchild, Tami Breana Gordon.

 

Vernell Edwards Gray

COFFEEVILLE—Ms. Vernell Edwards Gray, 81, of Coffeeville, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford.

Born November 18, 1938, in Coffeville, she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Lucile Haynes Edwards. Vernell was an active and devoted member of Coffeeville First Baptist Church, where she served for many years as church pianist. She worked for over 30 years as personnel manager at Kellwood in Coffeeville and ultimately retired from Carpenter Management in Grenada. While she was a loving mother, sister, and friend, the title she adored most was grandmother. Her sweet spirit and dry wit will be remembered and cherished for many years to come.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in Coffeeville First Baptist Church with Rev. Truman Scarborough and Rev. Craig Baker officiating. Interment followed in the Broadstreet Cemetery. The family received friends from noon until service time at the church. McKibben & Guinn Funeral Service of Grenada had charge of arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Deana Gray of Coffeeville; a son, Gaylon Gray (Lisa) of Coffeeville; a sister, Vera Shows of Louisville; one brother Rev. James Edwards (Shirley) of Coffeeville; and a very special granddaughter, Novie Claire Gray of Calhoun City.

 

Bobbie Hartley

TILLATOBA—Mrs. Bobbie Hartley, 90, of Tillatoba passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 27, 2020. She was a member of Tillatoba Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon Craig and Vera Craig Crenshaw; her husband, Virgil Hartley, and a daughter, Ginger Hartley.

Survivors include a son, Mark Hartley (Faye); two grandchildren, Nathan Hartley (Betsy) and Kristie Hartley; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held in the Oakland Cemetery, Thursday, May 28, where she was laid to rest by  her husband and daughter, with Bro. Clay Baker, pastor of Tillatoba Methodist Church, and Bro. Ricky Harris, pastor of Tillatoba Baptist Church, officiating. Pallbearers were Nathan Hartley, William Earl Tillman, Eddie Simmons, Mike Coleman, Steve Ramage and Barry Jackson. Honorary pallbearers were J. L. Crawford and Gene Standridge.

 

J.W. Moorman

TILLATOBA—J. W. Moorman of Tillatoba passed away Saturday morning, June 20, 2020, at Grenada Living Center due to COVID-19. He was 86 years old.

The immediate family gathered at Newsom Funeral Home in Charleston at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, with interment in the Moorman Family Cemetery at Tillatoba.

He leaves his loving wife of 35 years, Jamal Darlene Melton Moorman of Tillatoba; a son, Keith Beck of Tillatoba; two sisters, Mary Lee (JK) of Cascilla and Shelby Ulry; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lenora Moorman; one daughter , Kathy Moorman Kendall; and a son, J. W. “Joey” Moorman, Jr.

 

Janice Allred Shuffield

WATER VALLEY—Janice Allred Shuffield, 73, entered the gates of Heaven Tuesday, June 16, 2020, peacefully in her sleep at home, cuddled in the arms of her husband of 58 years.

The funeral service was held Friday, June 19, at 2 p.m. in North Main Methodist Church at Water Valley with Bro. Doug Pepper, Bo Chinault and Binnie Turnage officiating. Visitation was held prior to the service beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Born in Calhoun County, Janice was a daughter of the late Mary Evelyn Peeples and Clyde Avery “Pat” Allred. She was the owner, and was a retired beautician at House of Beauty. She was a member of North Main Methodist Church and a member of Rebekah Lodge #38. She held immense pride and love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as cooking for her family. No one ever left her presence hungry. She also enjoyed gardening and adored flowers.

Janice is survived by her husband, Odie Shuffield of Water Valley; a son, Steve Shuffield (Teresa) of Water Valley; a daughter, Sherry Shuffield Fischer (Paul) of Water Valley; a brother, Bob Allred (Pinky) of Heber Springs, Ark.; six grandchildren, Chad Fisher, Codie Shuffield, Suzanne Fischer Brooks, Tanner Shuffield, Shay Shuffield, and Preslee Fischer; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary McCain and Dorothy Peacock; and four brothers, Sam Allred, Tommy Allred, Billy Allred, and Tony Allred.
