WATER VALLEY – Barry L. Weeks, D.M.D. PC was presented the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Business Spotlight Award by Chamber of Commerce President Raymond Hawkins on Wednesday, September 9, in honor of his outstanding commitment to the community for the past 37 years.
Dr. Weeks graduated from Coffee High School in Florence, Ala., in 1973. A long-time Ole Miss fan, he played football under Coach Johnny Vaught as a “walk-on” for a year before deciding to pursue a career in dentistry. He graduated from Ole Miss with a B.A. in Biology.
While at Ole Miss Dr. Weeks met his wife-to-be, Charmie, through a good friend, Lynn Crawford, from Water Valley. They married and lived in Jackson while Dr. Weeks attended The University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. He was selected from his freshman class to work with a Jackson orthodontist throughout his dental school years. This experience solidified his decision to make dentistry a career.
After receiving his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree 1983, knowing they wanted to live in a small town, they moved to Water Valley with their two children, Angela and Matt. Since that time Dr. Weeks has practiced general dentistry for all ages, and has been active in both community and church organizations
Dr. Weeks is a member of the American Dental Association and the Mississippi Dental Association. He has represented the MDA in Washington, D.C. as an advocate for the profession of dentistry. Locally, he has served on the board of the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Yalobusha County Economic Development Foundation. He has also served on the Water Valley School Board and has taught Sunday School classes for many years.
Charmie Weeks serves as the business manager of the practice. She is a past member of the Southern Living Garden Club, a past-president of the Water Valley Junior Auxiliary and a past vice-president of the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. She re-organized the Friends of Blackmur Memorial Library with a small group of dedicated young mothers, and currently serves on the board of trustees for the library.
“We are grateful for the blessings the Lord has given us, and for all the wonderful patients who have become dear friends throughout these 37 years,” Dr. Weeks said. “Our staff is the heartthrob of this practice – we are family. Christy Mills has been my dental assistant for 27 years. Stacie Defer, my dental hygienist, has been with me for 14 years. Kalen Kelsoe joined our team this year as my front office manager. During the past 37 years I have had other excellent staff members and wish I could name each of them here. I would like to thank the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce for this recognition.”
