WATER VALLEY – Mrs. Lucy Beard, 60, transitioned on Monday, June 14, 2021 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born October 5, 1960.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, June 17, at 2 p.m., at Orwood Cemetery in Taylor. Serenity-Daniels Funeral Home of Water Valley is in charge of the arrangements.
Alice Marie Garrett
WATER VALLEY – Alice Marie Garrett, age 53, of Water Valley, died unexpectedly Monday, June 14, 2021, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
She was born September 13, 1967, in Peoria, Ill. to the late Casper and Elsie (Henson) Smith. Not long after graduating from high school, Alice married the love of her life, David, and became a Navy wife. She followed David to his different duty stations over the course of the next eight years, during which they had five children.
After settling down, Alice began working in the retail industry, all the while taking care of her family. After moving to the Water Valley area, she and David opened “Da Bears Den” bakery on Main Street where she served the community by making baked goods. When not working, Alice loved to ride her own Harley trike along with David and travel to the Smokey Mountains where they loved to tent camp and cook over a dutch oven. Another of her passions was scrap booking. She even made a scrap book for each of her children. But nothing held a deeper place in her heart than that of her family.
Visitation was held Thursday, June 17, in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home from 5 until 7 p.m. Services followed on Friday, June 18, at 1 p.m. at Camp Ground Baptist Church with Bro. Jerry King officiating. Burial was in Camp Ground Cemetery.
Alice is survived by her husband of 35 years, David Garrett; one son, David Lee Garrett (Kaitlyn) of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; four daughters, Marie Garrett of Decatur, Ill., Samantha Garrett of Chillicothe, Mo., Bonnie Ogle (Chris) of Roxboro, N.C. and Sharon K. Garrett of Mossville, Ill; two grandchildren; and seven brothers.
Alice was preceded in death by both of her parents.
OXFORD – Carolyn Griffing, age 82, of Oxford went to her eternal home Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at The Pinnacle assisted living facility in Oxford. She was born May 25, 1939 in Water Valley to the late James and Dorothy (Ramsey) Hunt.
After high school, Carolyn pursued and achieved a doctorate in Counseling from Trevecca College in Nashville, Tenn. Having a passion for young people, she spent her working career as an educator in the Memphis City School system. The first 20 years, while she was pursuing her Phd., were spent teaching children from elementary all the way through junior high. Her remaining 10 years, until she retired, were dedicated to counseling.
When not working, Carolyn loved shopping, gardening, and going to the beach.
Visitation is planned for Thursday, June 24, in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home from 4 until 5 p.m. Services will immediately follow at 5 p.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Rev. Jennifer Southall officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Carolyn is survived by two sons, Robert Hemphill and Case Hemphill (Kat); and one daughter, Anne Hemphill.
Along with her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Hunt and James Hunt; and her twin sister, Katherine Ward.
Brenda Lea Kilgore
WATER VALLEY – Brenda Lea Kilgore, age 57, of Water Valley died Monday, June 21, 2021, at her home surrounded by family after an extended illness. She was born May 9, 1964, in Oxford to the late Milton and Gwendolyn (Tabor) Musick.
Brenda was a traditional wife whose passion was serving her family as a homemaker. When she wasn’t serving her family, she found great joy in music, working in her flowers, especially roses, and cooking for special occasions. Her specialty, with the family and those that knew her, was her homemade peach cobbler that was “everyone’s favorite”. But what brought the greatest pleasure to her heart were her grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled Friday, June 25 in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home from 1 until 3 p.m. Services will immediately follow at 3 p.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery in Coffeeville.
Brenda is survived by her husband of 35 years, Leonard Kilgore; three daughters, Jennifer Littlejohn (John) and Lauren Kilgore, both of Water Valley and Georgia Kilgore of Coffeeville; four grandchildren; and one sister, Linda Allgood (Jimmy) of Oxford.
In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by one son, Jonathan Kilgore.
Sandra Hawkins Mitchell
WATER VALLEY – Sandra Hawkins Mitchell, age 75, of Water Valley passed from this life Sunday, June 20, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
She was born September 24, 1945, in Bruce to the late Howard and Essie Belle (Kuhn) Hawkins. Following School, Sandra worked for “Uncle Joe” at Hawkins Auto Parts in Calhoun City, later transitioning to Rebel Chevrolet in Oxford.
Later, her career path changed as she became partners with her husband, Eddie, in Mitchell’s Drug store in Water Valley. After a number of years working for themselves, they closed the store and went to work at the Joy Pharmacy in the old Jones supermarket in Water Valley. Sandra was a member of the First United Methodist Church as well as the Junior Auxiliary. Her joys were simple, which included reading, sewing and doing crafts. But nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her grandchildren at their sporting events.
Visitation is planned for Wednesday, June 23, in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home from 3 until 4 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. Don Lewis officiating.
Sandra is survived by her husband of 55 years, Eddie Mitchell of Water Valley; one son, Howard Edwin Mitchell of Destin, Fla.; one daughter, Kellie Mitchell Burress (Steve) of Water Valley; six grand children, Lee Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, Elizabeth Mitchell; A.K. Burress, Grant Burress and Reid Burress; one great-grand child, Elias Mitchell; and one sister, Beth Vail (Charles) of Senatobia.
Along with her parents, Sandra was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Lee Hawkins.
Marlin Russell, Jr.
OAKLAND – Marlin Russell Jr., age 75, of Oakland died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, June 17, 2021. He was born November 22, 1945, in Calhoun County to the late Marlin Russell Sr. and Nellie (Mooneyham) Russell. After leaving school, Marlin served our country in the United States Army National Guard. He spent his career as a truck driver, spending most of those years driving for LMT Trucking Company. Marlin was a down to earth man who enjoyed the simple things in life. Those passions were hunting, fishing, and of course his family.
Visitation was held Saturday, June 19, in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home from 5 until 7 p.m. Services were Sunday, June 20, at Oakland Baptist Church with Bro. Jimmy Hood officiating. Burial was in Lambert Cemetery.
Marlin is survived by two sons, William Russell of Madison and Tommy Russell (Tonya) of Haughton, La; three daughters, Debbie Carol Chambers (Ben) of Courtland, Lisa Russell of Oakland and Candis Collison (Ashley) of Cocoa, Fla.; two brothers, Larry Russell and Shorty Russell; three sisters, Jaunita Parks, Brenda Brock, Glenda Clark (Donald); 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Marlin was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Russell; one son, Marlin Lee Russell; and one brother, Jimmy Russell.
James Robert Stacy
WATER VALLEY – James Robert (Rab) Stacy, age 68, of Water Valley was born July 2, 1952 to Dorothy Stacy and the late Hubert Stacy and went to be with his Heavenly Father on June 7, 2021. He was what we would call a simple man. Rab was satisfied with just being at home and surrounded by his family. He was the most hardworking man and would never shy away from a job and when he set his mind to something, he made it happen. His work career started as just a little boy helping his dad farm their cotton fields. Rab started his working career for Mott’s Inc. (later becoming ConAgra) as a maintenance man for over 30 years. Afterwards, he went to work for Valley Tool, Inc. as a dunnage supervisor, retiring in 2019 after 14 years.
Rab served our country as a member of the Army National Guard for from 1971-1978.
Rab was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather (Pappaw Rab). He was a quiet man who enjoyed and looked forward to the get-togethers with his family and lit up when grand kids were around. He enjoyed hunting and running dogs. He liked to stay busy and enjoyed working on projects that got him outside.
Visitation was held Wednesday, June 9, in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home. Services followed in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. Billy Childs officiating.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia Walls Stacy of Water Valley; one daughter, Alicia (James) Bonds of Oxford; one son Eric, (Stephanie) Stacy, Sr. of Water Valley; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Doris (Kenny) Burrowes of Water Valley. Along with his father, Rab is proceeded in death by two brothers, Ricky and Randy Stacy.
