Robert Joseph Dickey
WATER VALLEY – Robert Joseph Dickey of Water Valley passed from this life at his home surrounded by family on Monday, March 28, 2022. He was 86. Joe was born June 25, 1935, in Water Valley to the late Marvin Wayne and Letha (Rampey) Dickey. One of eight children, he grew up and lived the majority of his life in Water Valley.
A pull to help his family prompted Joe to leave school early and attend an auto mechanics school in Memphis where he learned a trade that he would apply his entire life.
Joe came back to Water Valley and worked for all the dealerships – Pontiac, Chevrolet and the Hendricks Ford dealership. In 1970, he opened his own shop and operated it until 1986 when he retired.
When not fixing cars, Joe loved to piddle with lawnmowers, grilling and gardening. But nothing meant more to him than his family whom he loved with all of his heart.
Visitation was held Friday, April 1 in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home. Services followed at 3 p.m. in Seven Oaks’ Henry Chapel with Bro. Chad Franks officiating. Burial was in Camp Ground Cemetery.
Joe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanette Dickey; one son, Terry Dickey (Charlotte); three daughters, Debbie Jackson (Bubba), Tammy Crocker (Donnie), and Lisa Spence (Stewart) – all of Water Valley; one brother, Richard Dickey of Plano, Texas; one sister, Hilda Mae Dickey of Memphis; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by four brothers, Billy Dickey, James Dickey, Donald Dickey and Marvin Dickey; and one sister, Mary Alice Hayles.
MERIDIAN – Darrell Hugueley of Meridian passed from this life Friday at St. Dominic hospital in Jackson on April 2, 2022. April 2, 2022. He was 79.
Darrell was born in Memphis to the late A.B. and Maisie (Hill) Hugueley. He spent his entire working career at Federal Express in Memphis. After retirement, he and Rita moved to Water Valley to enjoy a slower pace. He was a kind and gentle man who didn’t mind helping where he could. Two years earlier they moved to Meridian to help take care of his mother-in-law. Darrell was a Shriner in the Jackson chapter and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of Sylva Rena Baptist Church.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rita Hugueley; one son, Darrell Hugueley, Jr.; one daughter, Dawn Gerlach; four grandchildren, Kyle Hugueley, Grace Hugueley, James Gerlach and Matthew Gerlach; and one sister, Jeannie Sandy.
In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Hugueley.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday April 9, 2022 at Sylva Rena Baptist Church. Seven Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Larry “Brent” Shirley
WATER VALLEY – Larry “Brent” Shirley died Monday, March 28, 2022 in the Yalobusha Nursing Home in Water Valley where he had been a resident since 2008.
Brent was born in New Albany on June 8, 1940, and was reared in Water Valley and Meridian. He was known for his love of sports, especially the University of Mississippi teams. He enjoyed the ministries and worship services provided by local churches at the nursing home.
A service was held April 4 at the Yalobusha Nursing Home with Rev. Freddie Moorman presiding. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Meridian.
Brent was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Louise McEwen (nee McGonagill) of Meridian; his sisters Brenda Shirley Reed of Mobile, Ala., Marilyn McEwen McGee of Danville, Ill. and Laverne McEwen Hudson of Batesville,and their husbands. He was the nephew of the late Ben and Ludie Appleton of Water Valley.
He is survived by his nephew, Eric Reed of Springfield, Illinois; cousins Ann Appleton (Bob) Laster of Raymond, Miss., Alma “Bunny” Everett (John) Clark of Spanish Fort, Ala., and their families. He is also survived by a host of faithful friends, including Al and Betty Davis of Water Valley and their family.
