Police Make Arrest In Auto Burglary
WATER VALLEY – A Sardis man was arrested for automobile burglary after allegedly breaking a window and grabbing a purse from a vehicle in the parking lot at Yalobusha General Hospital.
Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported Hershey Nelson, age 37, was arrested on August 27 at the Valley Motel within two hours of the incident. Officers identified Nelson from video surveillance at the hospital.
“We recovered some of the stolen items from the motel that night,” Mangrum said. “The purse was recovered the next day.”
The chief said that officers were familiar with Nelson from an earlier report of a suspicious person at Dollar General.
“There was a report of a possible shoplifter involving a suspect wearing no pants,” Mangrum explained.
Nelson was booked in the Yalobusha County Detention Center and remains in custody. A $20,000 bond was set in municipal court.
The chief noted that most auto burglaries in the city involve unlocked doors.
“This one was a little different, because the doors were locked. I encourage everyone in the city to not only lock their vehicle’s doors, but also remove valuables that may be visible to someone outside the vehicle.”
In other arrests, Mangrum reported Mark Ragon of Water Valley was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The arrest stemmed from a roadblock on North Main Street at 8:25 a.m. Mangrum said officers discovered approximately 88 grams of marijuana in the vehicle. Ragon was booked at the Yalobusha County Detention Center and posted bond.
