WATER VALLEY – In-person and mail-in absentee ballots are available in the circuit clerk’s offices for the Nov. 8 General Election that includes a contested race for the 2nd Congressional District, a special election Yalobusha County Sheriff, and other non-contested judicial races.
In Mississippi, registered voters are eligible to vote absentee because of age (65 or older), health or work demands, or their affiliation with the U.S. Armed Forces.
For example, voters who will be outside their county of residence on election day are entitled to vote by absentee ballot. Absentee ballots can be cast in the circuit clerk’s offices in the Water Valley and Coffeeville courthouses through Nov. 5.
Yalobusha County Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney reported that the deadline for new voters to register to vote in the election is Monday, October 10. In addition to regular business hours on weekdays, his offices will be open from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, October 8 for voter registration. Burney also reminds voters that October 10 is the deadline to notify his office of a change of address. State statute requires voters to live in the precinct they vote in.
Four candidates qualified to run in the special non-partisan election for sheriff to fill the remaining year in the term. The election comes after the August, 2021, death of Sheriff Mark D. Fulco. The candidates include Brent Anderson, Luther G. Folson, Jr., Jerimaine Gooch and Roger L. Pollan.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast on Nov. 8, the top two vote-getters will advance to a run-off election on Nov. 29.
