The 2023 regular session ended in the wee hours of Saturday, April 1, as we voted on House Bill 603, the final appropriation bill to come before us. The measure contained a number of items that will benefit Yalobusha County and the surrounding area. One important item that will enhance cultural activity in our county is the appropriation of $250,000 to continue improving the Water Valley Civic Auditorium.
You may recall that I requested and we received $225,000 last year for needed work on the center. With the additional appropriation in HB 603, Water Valley and its surroundings area will enjoy the benefits of having an attractive, welcoming and functional place for large community gatherings, concerts and other civic events.
I am particularly pleased to report that my request was approved for $750,000 “to assist the City of Water Valley with funding for maintenance, repair and facilitation of broadband service by the electric department.” As we all realize by now, the availability of reliable, strong electric and broadband services is necessary in today’s technologically dependent world. I am very proud that Water Valley will be better able to secure these services for all of our residents now and in the future.
I also requested and we were provided a $100,000 appropriation to “assist Yalobusha County in providing matching funds of the Tennessee Valley Authority grant for the industrial park.” We can only attract industry if we have welcoming, up-to-date facilities available for it.
When I departed the beautiful, well-lit State Capitol at 2:34 a.m. Saturday morning, I was appreciative of the support that I received from my House colleagues in my efforts to improve and sustain Yalobusha County’s potential as a place poised for the future. Now, these measures will become law with the governor’s signature.
