The Water Valley track team earned silver medals in the 4×100 Relay, 4×200 Relay and the 100 meter run in the state competition on May 10. Relay team members Saveon Freeman, Dylan Moore, Daylon Vaughn and Elijah White combined for the silver medals in the two relays.
“We had a really good shot, it was really close,” Coach Chris Yancy said about the relay team’s finish. “It actually came down to the hundredths of a second between first place and second place.”
Yancy is a 1999 graduate of Water Valley High School. He coached at North Panola High School until returning to him home district last year. This year marks his second in the district. He also coaches boys’ basketball.

Elijah White also won second place Elijah White in the hundred-meter run at state competition last week.
“I am so grateful that I am getting the opportunity to coach hometown kids. Some of my classmates’ or relatives’ kids. To be able coach them and instill in them great values and character to help them become positive citizens of our community. It means a lot giving back to my community because people poured into me,” Yancy added.
Elijah White also won second place in the hundred-meter run.
A fifth team member, sophomore Anthony Butler, also qualified to compete at state and earned a fifth place finish in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles.
“He is a sophomore, he will be back stronger and better next year and we will be looking for him on that podium,” Yancy said.
Yancy said the athletes have taken pride in track and the program has grown during the last two years.
“I see us getting even better, I think we can make a stronger run at the state titles next year. We will have to rebuild the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, but we will be really strong in the field events and individuals events,” the coach predicted.
Yancy is a 1999 graduate of Water Valley High School. He coached at North Panola High School until returning to his home district for the 2021-2022 school year. This year marks his second in the district. He also coaches boys’ basketball.
“Being from Water Valley and coming back and help building this track program means a lot to me,” Yancy added. “We still have the same batons that Coach (Murray) Dixon had.”
Yancy is also grateful to coach in his hometown.
“I am so grateful that I am getting the opportunity to coach hometown kids. Some of my classmates’ or relatives’ kids. To be able coach them and instill in them great values and character to help them become positive citizens of our community. It means a lot giving back to my community because people poured into me,” Yancy added.
