In the first “Inside the Blue and White” article I ever wrote, I started off by saying how thankful I am to live in a town where community is at the center of everything. It’s over a year later and that statement is still so true. In fact, I think that this year made me realize more than ever how truly blessed I have been to grow up in Water Valley. I honestly could not imagine growing up anywhere else.
I also could not imagine spending the last 13 years of my life as anything other than a Blue Devil. Trust me when I say that our school system is not perfect. I know because I have experienced it firsthand. There are many flaws within it.
However, I can say with absolute certainty that I would not be where I am today if it were not for the people and lessons learned from inside the blue and white walls. I would not be who I am today without the encouragement from Coach Howland, the stories from Coach Ross, the support from Mrs. Koshenina, the guidance from Mr. Barnes, the many conversations with Coach Norris, and so many more who have made such an impact on my life.
The Water Valley school system is a huge part of who I am. It taught me many lessons that were crucial to my education like annotating literature, writing essays, and solving an equation. It also taught me many lessons that I will probably never use again in my life, like writing a geometry proof or balancing a chemical equation. My years at Water Valley taught me many educational lessons, but more than that they taught me lessons of true value like perseverance, friendship, creativity, and leadership.
I will always be grateful for those lessons. I will also always be grateful for the memories that Water Valley has given me! Every moment on the volleyball court, every swing at the golf course, every decoration day with the Student Council, every picture I took for the annual, every laugh in the classroom with my friends, and every little moment in between will forever stay hidden in my heart. I did not know it then but these are the moments that I am going to remember most and the stories that I will tell for the rest of my life. I am beyond thankful for my years as a Blue Devil!
Now as I am finishing up my final article with a few tears filling my eyes, I want to say thank you! Thank you to a community that has supported me in everything that I have done! Thank you for cheering me on and encouraging me! I cannot tell you how much I have loved writing this article week after week. I have so enjoyed being able to let you in on a piece of our lives at WVHS. You do not know how much it has meant to me to have been able to connect with you in this way. This article has been so important to me throughout my junior and senior years! In so many ways this article is for you. I wrote it to inform you of all that happens at WVHS on a weekly basis. Yet, this article is also fully mine. It’s like my own sweet, little personal time capsule of my junior and senior years. I will forever cherish this article and what it has meant to me.
Tomorrow night I will leave Bobby Clark Field as a student for the last time; however, to quote one of my all time favorite movies, “Once a Blue Devil, Always a Blue Devil!” When I think back on these past 13 years, I see how blessed I have been to have spent them inside the blue and white!

Water Valley High School Class of 2023 valedictorian Chloe Clement (left photo) reflects on her 13 years as a student in her final column in the Herald. Clement is among 69 seniors who will receive diplomas on May 25 at Bobby Clark Field.
Clement launched the Inside The Blue and White column during her junior year. The weekly column will continue at the start of the 2023-2024 school year with a new columnist, Mya Harden.
