A fabulous second week is now accomplished, with many more to gain! This week’s highlights at Water Valley High School have been a big eye-opener and preview of how chaotic yet exciting the school year will continue to be throughout the 2023-24 school year.
All of the fun activities are starting to emerge, and it is keeping the Blue Devils on their toes! Throughout the week, students, teachers, administrators, coaches, and everyone within the walls of Water Valley High School have put in great effort to make everything work as effectively and efficiently as possible while still focusing on the primary goal of creating a community of lifelong learners, and responsible global students who can grow and be champions of their own success. As the days of this school week have concluded, I can say that the Blue Devils are in for a sweet, spectacular 2023-24 school-year treat!
The Water Valley Annual Staff took pride in celebrating the birthdays of two squad members as they are now a year older young students and adults. The Annual Staff Committee also blended this gathering with a warm congratulations for the return of one student who enlisted in the U.S. Army, a powerful force with respect to defending and serving our country.
Senior student Kalaila Folson spent ten weeks or perhaps her entire summer in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, at what’s commonly known as “boot camp” or Basic Training for the U.S. Army. While finishing her senior year, her career will consist of spending one weekend per month on active duty. When asked to provide a brief summary of how her summer was spent at training and a few of the things she endured while at Basic Combat Training, Kalila responded, “Overall, my summer was great! I learned many things and made several friends. Some of the things that I experienced included a 10-mile ruck march, shooting M4s, camping out in the woods, grenades, gas chamber, PT tests, and a 40-foot propel tower.”

Water Valley High senior Kalaila Folson completed basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, this summer.
Kalaila managed to accomplish all of the training obstacles and hardship and ended her course with a “home sweet home” safe return trip. Kalaila is now officially one of the many soldiers who play a vital role in contributing to defending our country.
The annual staff celebrated the birthdays by singing the traditional happy birthday song, baking sweet treats, bringing a variety of party snacks, and lots of hugs. Aside from the group celebrating birthdays and spreading comforting welcome home hugs, the real celebration is the everlasting friendship and bonds each member has created through the production and union of the annual Staff Committee.
The sports within Water Valley High are taking off quickly! The golf team traveled to our local country club to host their first match of the season. They competed against Pontotoc as they held their own, only falling short of two strokes behind the opposing team.
The Lady Devils color guard team took valuable time out of their day to assemble a weekend practice where they worked together to continue critiquing their game day routine. They decided to spice it up by creating a fun dress-up theme for the day!
Each team member wore attire that fit the clothing of another sport. After a long day of hard work and much flag detailing, the color guard team ended the day by team bonding.
In preparation for last Friday night’s football game, the Blue Devils had their pre-game meal, which consisted of protein and carb overload. This meal is necessary in order to provide and quickly replenish energy during strenuous games. The Water Valley football team traveled to East Webster as they kicked off the season with their traditional scrimmage game. They competed against the Wolverines, where they played three total scrimmages, two varsity games and a junior varsity game. The Blue Devils managed to pull out a victory for the night with a winning score of 14-6 in the first scrimmage!
Let’s show our support by attending this Friday night football game at Independence as the Blue Devils take on the Wildcats!
All in all, the students within the Blue and White have been consistent throughout the week with positivity, smiles, and school spirit! We are off to a magnificent start! I’ll be sure to share any and everything that takes place inside the Blue and White!
