WATER VALLEY – – The Water Valley Junior High Blue Devils football teams are off to a hot start in 2023. The eighth grade team has started (2-0) with back-to-back shutout victories over Charleston, 14 – 0, and Pope, 14 -0.
In the Charleston game on Tuesday, August 29, the game was knotted up at zero to zero at halftime. Running back Braylen Benson added two second-half rushing touchdowns and quarterback Parker Chapman hit wideout Dakota Burrowes for the two-point conversion pass to end the scoring. The strong running came behind the offensive Line of Peyton Chandler, Jarieon Brown, Thomas Pryor, Caleb Brown, and Jordan Blackburn.
The Blue Devils defense only allowed one first down in the contest, but that was immediately thwarted by a strip tackle and fumble recovery by Burrowes.
The Blue Devils traveled to Pope to take on the homestanding Bulldogs on Tuesday, September 5. Pope came out strong and thanks to a goal line stand and a Chapman 91-yard interception returned for a touchdown (which would be brought back to midfield due to a penalty), the Blue Devils kept the shutout alive.
The Junior Devils would take a six to zero halftime lead thanks to a Benson rushing touchdown.
In the Second Half, Benson would add another score and seventh grade running back Demaria Johnson would add the two-point conversion to end the scoring.
Pope would threaten again, but the Blue Devils held strong and prevented the Bulldogs from reaching paydirt thanks to a four-down stand by the young defense. Linebacker Landon Johnsey and cornerback T.J. Jackson paced the Blue Devils with six total tackles in the contest.
The Blue Devils junior high teams were on the road playing J.Z. George at presstime Tuesday. The action includes seventh grade, eighth grade and junior varsity, a three-game set.
