The Blue Devils enjoyed a successful homecoming week jam-packed with school spirit, positive energy and fantastic outfits. Students, teachers, and faculty enjoyed every dress-up day created by your very own Water Valley High School Student Council. The council members also promoted homecoming with all of the enchanting decorations throughout the hallways to add to the school spirit and overall make the atmosphere groovy and disco, the theme for homecoming.
As one of the most significant events at Water Valley High School, the week-long action included themed outfits, which led to outrageous accessories, crazy hairstyles, face paint, and many over-the-top looks.
To kick start each morning, the two morning announcers at Water Valley High, Jake Crawford, and Mya Harden, both student council members, played each song over the intercoms throughout the week to get the Blue Devils in the spirit.

The Water Valley High School homecoming queen will be crowned Friday night at Bobby Clark Field before the game. The homecoming court includes front row, from left) Addy Douglas (freshman), Amari Gooch (sophomore), Mariya Morgan (junior) and Bree Spearman (junior); and (back row, from left) senior maids Ashlyn Darby, Kelly Douglas, Evey Brooks and Mya Harden. The homecoming ceremony starts at 6:15.
Monday, the students were instructed to wear their bell bottoms and 70s outfits to show their groovy side; this theme was paired with the song “Ring My Bell” by Anita Ward.
Tuesday, the Blue Devils left home in their finest pajamas as P.J. Day was one of the most participated days across all grades, pairing with the song “Night Fever” by Bee Gees.
Wednesday was the well-known Y.M.C.A. Day, and students dressed like members of the Village People in the popular song by Village People.
Walking into the school on Thursday, you would have seen more than just Blue and White with the annual color war day amongst all the 7th-12th grades. Each grade had its own personal color to show off. Thursday’s song was “Respect” by Aretha Franklin.
Last but not least, homecoming Friday theme was a multitude of options: Fancy attire, Blue and White to support school colors and homecoming T-shirt day. The song matched with Friday was very fitting for the occasion, considering that it was “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.
Friday was a busy day, the student council hosted the traditional homecoming pep rally – the first pep rally of the year. Band members led the rally with groovy beats for the football team’s entrance and cheerleaders’ cheers. The pep rally was followed by the introduction of each homecoming maid from each grade, 9th-12th, accompanied by a football member from their grade.
Freshman maid Addy Douglas was escorted by player #41 Gabe Butler. Sophomore maid Amari Gooch was escorted by player #61 Jeremy Hampton. Junior maid Bree Spearman was escorted by player #3 Taylen Johnson, and Mariya Morgan was escorted by player #89 Dez Campbell.
Senior maids Evey Brooks was escorted by player #9 Will Embry, Ashylyn Darby was escorted by player #78 Jack Woodard, Kelly Douglas was escorted by player #8 Jaden Morgan, and player #1 Ty Pritchard escorted Mya Harden. After their grand entrance, the official fun was about to begin. The first game was musical chairs, with each football escort battling to try and be the remaining player. The crowd went wild as the final two players, Dez Campbell and Jaden Morgan, fought so hard for the remaining chair that they tapped into their football skills that led to a gym floor tackle. It was later clarified that Junior Dez Campbell would take the win, dominating all the others in musical chairs.
The next game required each homecoming maid to work with their escort to try and solve a word puzzle. The maids received a bag full of balloons, each balloon holding a different letter or word. They were instructed to pop each balloon and deliver it to their escort to crack the code.
Senior Escort Ty Pritchard and Senior Maid Mya Harden quickly solved the final puzzle. It stated, “Beat the Jags,” and that is exactly what the football team would later do that night with a winning score of 67-16, blowing the Jags out of the water for homecoming.
This fun rally ended with a funky dance to “Dancing Queen,” a cheer from the cheerleaders, and a competition between each grade to see which one has the most spirit; both the senior class and eighth graders won the spirit stick.
Later that night, before the football game kicked off, the court was presented as the beautiful maids were introduced to the crowd. After each maid made their entrance onto the field with their stunning dress and complementary escort, the moment that everyone was waiting for finally came, answering the pondering question, “Who would take on the queen title?”
Alumnus Maggie Ward would later announce Mya Harden was crowned Water Valley High School’s 2023 70’s Disco Homecoming Queen!
Check in next week to see what your local Blue Devils are up to inside the Blue and White.
