WATER VALLEY – The Water Valley Junior High eighth grade football team remained undefeated after beating the J.Z. George Jaguars out of Carrollton in back-to-back weeks. On Tuesday, Sept. 12, the Blue Devils traveled to Carrollton and things got hairy as they fell behind 14 to 0 in the first half.
On the very last play of the half, quarterback Parker Chapman found running back Braylen Benson down the right sideline for a 43-yard completion and score. Chapman converted the two-point conversion on a rush around right end to cut the deficit from 14 to 6 at the intermission.
The second half was all Blue Devils behind a strong running game led by the offensive line of Peyton Chandler, Jarieon Brown, Thomas Pryor, Caleb Brown, and Jordan Blackburn. Benson capped on an impressive drive for the touchdown and Chapman Quarterback sneaked in for the go-ahead Point After Touchdown. The lone possession for the Jaguars in the second half saw the Junior Devil defense hold them to negative yardage thanks to a Chapman sack and good tackling on the perimeter by Dakota Burrowes and T.J. Jackson. With that victory, the Junior Devils improved to (3-0) and their seventh grade counterparts tied the Jaguars, six to six.
The return trip was a different story as the eighth grade Blue Devils defeated the visiting Jaguars in convincing fashion, 28 to six, on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Strong running by Benson and Chapman, coupled with a halfback pass from Benson to Burrowes for a long touchdown allowed the Blue Devils to play everyone in the second half.
Defensively, the Devils were paced by Chapman with six total tackles and Demarea Johnson with five total tackles. This victory improved the Junior Devils’ record to 4-0 on the season. The Devils will host Independence on Tuesday, Sept. 26 and close out the Season at Home against Pope on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
