It’s been a calm week inside Water Valley High. Students, teachers and administrators did a fine job preparing each student for pre-break testing. Following many weeks of back-to-back fun, many students were making the transition into testing before school is out for an entire week of fall fun!
But before students could prepare for fall break, they must first prepare for their final testing. Not only students but teachers and faculty were anxiously waiting for the students to submit their last few grades, turn in the latest assignments, and exceed expectations on their tests before everyone headed into fall break!
The high school annual staff had an eventful week! They started Monday off by creating a new Instagram series titled “Motivational Monday.” Staff members launched this with the idea of spreading positivity within the walls of Water Valley High. Each Monday, a new teacher will provide an encouraging word to uplift the students and motivate them to keep going! Tenth grade English teacher (some call him a life coach) Dexter Ross was the first participant in the new series. He stated, “If you have confidence, you win the race before you start; without confidence, you lose before you even sign up for the race!”
Thank you, Mr. Ross, for your empowering words.
The annual staff also decorated a table, poster, and donation box, all dedicated to Mrs. Paula Brown, a phenomenal teacher at Water Valley High battling cancer. This table, located at the home side entrance of last Friday night’s football game, was filled with sentimental photos as a reminder of all her loving moments inside Water Valley High. The table included decorative donation box, and lots of bright orange to represent leukemia cancer, which she is overcoming! Annual staff director and English teacher Anne Koshenina was the mastermind of this arrangement. She did an outstanding job working the table and handing out orange ribbons to fans.
This past Friday Night Football Lights was one to remember. It was the first October Pink Out game of the season and the stands were packed! It was also themed “Black Out” for the student section, and in honor of Paula Brown, orange ribbons were worn throughout the night to show the town’s support for her battle with cancer. While the Blue Devils did not have the outcome, we were all cheering for them as played hard and put on a show for the fans.
During this fall break, the Blue Devil football team will host a home game tomorrow, Thursday night, against the MS Palmer Dragons. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Be there to support your home team!
The Water Valley marching band traveled to Grenada High School and dominated this past Saturday at the State evaluation band competition!
They have all worked extremely hard to accomplish their impressive Disney-themed halftime performance. Their dedication, perseverance, and extended daily practices in the heat and rain paid off when the judges announced their final scoring. Scoring ranges from one to five. Five represents poor marching skills, four is fair, three means good, two is excellent, and the best score possible is one meaning superior. Junior drum major Jackson Herrera received a superior rating along with the color guard led by Sophomore captain Amari Gooch! Percussion is not far behind, receiving a two.
The band as a whole earned a two, showing that they are an excellent marching band! This could not have been possible without the great leadership of band director Wes Brown. Congratulations to our very own Water Valley Marching Band on their well-deserved award.
Though this week was slower-paced than usual, it was nice to calm down and enjoy the little things. Being part of such a well-knit school with supportive peers makes each day well worth it! Water Valley High ended the week off on a good note with lots of community involvement and support.
Continue reading the weekly update to see what your local Blue Devils are up to!
