A pursuit that spanned three counties on I-55 ended without incident after spike strips were used to help disable a stolen Chevrolet Tahoe.
OAKLAND – A Lexington man with a lengthy arrest history fled from deputies after an attempted traffic stop at the Oakland exit on I-55. Sheriff Jerimaine Gooch reported Sammie Winters was arrested on October 5 following a lengthy pursuit that ended in Lexington.
“An observant deputy spotted a white Chevrolet Tahoe that had been reported stolen in Memphis,” Gooch said about the arrest. “Approximately 20 law enforcement vehicles from 10 different agencies joined the pursuit before the vehicle was stopped near the Vaiden exit on I-55.”
The sheriff reported that Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers used spike strips at two different locations during the chase, ultimately puncturing all of the tires on the stolen vehicle and ending the chase. Winters was transported back to Yalobusha County and charged with felony fleeing and receiving stolen property.
“This was a good arrest. Winters has a lengthy record for burglaries, assaults and other crimes in Mississippi,” Gooch told the Herald.
