Is your name going to be on the “Great Chili Cook-Off Roster?” It’s sign-up time for one of the most contested cook-offs in the Valley, the Rotary Club’s eighth annual Chili Cook-off is scheduled Nov. 11 in conjunction with the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce’s Holiday Open House.
Competition is always stiff with dozens of entries for the judges to sample in the blind taste test. Last year Amy and Eric Olson claimed the top prize, with Mary Issacs taking second and Jeanette Whitehead finishing third. Amy Olson explained that her Texas-style recipe came from her late father, acclaimed cook Bill Rotenberry.
There is a $10 fee to enter the contest and entries are due by 10 a.m. the morning of the event and must be in a crockpot. The first place winner receives $100 and the coveted Chili Cook-Off trophy. The second place prize is $50 and third place is $25. To enter, call Rotarians Phyllis Goodwin at (662) 473-7112 or Tyler Hill at (662) 418-8101 or contact Cinnamon Foster via Facebook.
Rotarians will also be selling chili, Fritos, cheese and a soft drink for the low price of $5 starting at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.
