Fun, Fun, Fun! Last week was overloaded with so many activities that the Blue Devils could barely keep up! The school spirit was at an all-time high with all of the positivity and liveliness flowing through the halls.
Starting Monday off strong, a well-known Mississippi advocate and local author Dottie Chapman-Reed visited the campus to inform students of the local history. Students and teachers visited her throughout the day as she passionately explained her constant research in her very own book titled, “Outstanding Black Women of Yalobusha County.”
Her book explains the stories of black women in Yalobusha County and how they contributed to the Mississippi community. Many students showed interest by following up with questions and even supported her by taking complimentary handouts such as bookmarks, purchasing apparel like cozy sweatshirts, and even looking through her history-filled book. This was a great informative way to start the week off.
Tuesday was another eventful day, especially for the Senior Class of 2024. The school prioritized a trip to local boomtown Oxford, where each senior would have the opportunity to view the gorgeous campus scenery of Ole Miss and learn many interesting facts. The senior class started their visit with a brief but detailed presentation given by the Assistant Director of Campus Visits, Mason Tilghman. After an interactive and descriptive introduction from Mr. Tilghman, each senior was then offered a complimentary Ole Miss t-shirt before breaking off into groups for the main tour given by currently enrolled Ole Miss students.
These students shared fun facts about the campus including the interesting architecture, and they even went as far as to learn their groups on a personal level and ask us what occupation we would like to pursue. They shared what courses they were taking, making the tour one to remember. With the newly gained knowledge of Ole Miss fresh on their mind, the seniors worked up an appetite and ended the tour off with a refreshing meal of their choice at the Rebel Market.
Jumping right into a wonderful Wednesday, the seniors were still engaging in college activities. A Northwest Community College representative came down to Water Valley High to assist the senior class with applications and answer any questions.. Not only did the representative help out with applications but also made sure to guide every senior as they filled out scholarship applications to ensure their chance of eligibility. The seniors at Water Valley are putting in the work and effort to ensure a successful future!
It was a thoughtful Thursday inside the walls of the Blue and White, taking a break from college applications and preparation for the future. Thursday was report card day! A day that few dread but many look forward to. The school has made a thoughtful gesture to reward all of the dedicated students for their marvelous grades.
Each student from 7th to 12th grade who achieved academic excellence for the first nine weeks grading period will be awarded an Honor Roll breakfast. This assembly will take place Friday morning, October 27, in the high school cafeteria. The students have the option to be accompanied by one guest. This breakfast will be a time of bonding and recognition for the highest-achieving students.
Aside from academics, the junior high basketball teams took on North Panola for their first home game of the season. Both the seventh and eighth grade girls’ teams snagged a win against the Cougars. Though the seventh grade boys fell only a few points short of a win, the eighth grade team was there to carry to notch another victory! Congratulations to all of the junior high basketball players for contributing to a Blue Devil victory.
A fantabulous Friday is always rewarded on the last day of a hard-working week. Many were awarded with the chance to have a fun and memorable pep rally for the younger students. The high school football players, cheerleaders, and band members traveled down to DES. (Davidson Elementary School) to hype up the younger students for the Friday night game and show them just how the “Big Kids” get down.
The elementary school was filled with laughter, smiles, and an unbearable roar from excited students waiting to witness the fun that was yet to come. As the band was blazing, the cheerleaders were dancing, the football players were making their grand entrance, and the elementary students lit up with chants and cheers to kick off the pep rally. This rally included dances and cheers from the high school cheerleaders and elementary Devil Doll cheerleaders, teacher versus cheerleader/football players games, t-shirt launching to the crowd, and overall a fun experience!
It was an eventful week inside the Blue and White. Check back in for the next update to have the best insight into what the Blue Devils could possibly be up to!
