Bells are ringing, elves are flying, lights are stringing, and the Blue Devils are in the Christmas spirit! Last week was exciting and filled with Christmas joy, ear-catching carols, and much holiday cheer as the students celebrated “Christmas Around the World.”
If you’re not up to date on what’s been taking place “Inside the Blue and White,” the students are taking on 10 days of “Christmas Around the World.” The student council created the theme for this year’s Christmas activities. The goal of this year’s theme is to introduce different traditions around the world to the students at Water Valley and to create the atmosphere of other countries so the students may experience what Christmas is like around the world.
Day 1: To kick the Christmas festivities off, Water Valley High started the Worldwide Christmas traditions right from our very own country, the U.S.A. It was a merry Monday as the students showed their Christmas spirit and love for pajamas by sporting their ugliest Christmas sweaters and wearing their coziest pajama pants. The council even contacted Santa Claus so the students could take some of their best selfies and group pictures. You better believe every student was on their best behavior because everyone knew (though cliché) Santa Claus was coming to town!
Day 2: It was a tree-filled Tuesday as the students traveled thousands of miles to South Africa, where they love to decorate their Christmas trees with handmade ornaments and decorations. While engaging in South Africa’s traditions, the student council members distributed unique “scratch-off” ornaments in various shapes, such as Santa on his sleigh, Christmas trees, snowflakes, and many more. After each student carefully decorated their ornament to their liking, the student council members hung them around the school on trees, in the halls, on classroom doors and pretty much anywhere their heart desired.
Day 3: It was a warm Wednesday in the cafeteria as all of Water Valley High enjoyed stopping by the lunch room to retrieve chicken strips and apple slices with their choice of toppings. After eating an everything-but-typical-yet-still-scrumptious-lunch, students stopped by the Christmas-themed backdrops to take even more selfies.
Whose tradition is this, I’m sure you’re wondering? Japan and China! Japanese and Chinese Christmas traditions include ordering Kentucky Fried Chicken and enjoying Christmas selfies around town; they also exchange apples as wishes for good health.
Day 4: The wintry air was filled with fine tunes as the student council members marched through the halls singing some of their favorite Christmas carols, such as “Deck the Halls,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” The children in Sweden celebrate Christmas and St. Lucia’s Day by dressing in white and caroling through town while wearing crowns of burning candles.
Therefore, the Children at Water Valley High did the same. I know what you’re thinking, and no, we did not have crowns with burning candles for obvious safety reasons, but students and some teachers did come dressed in their all-white outfits and listened to the student council sing their lovely Christmas carols.
Day 5: Due to being a Frosty Friday, the students made one last stop in Mexico before returning home for the weekend. They made sure to wear their red, white, and green to show their support for Mexico; and it wouldn’t be a trip to Mexico if they didn’t stop for a warm cup of Mexican hot chocolate spiced with cinnamon and cayenne. This sure was a way to turn up the heat and end the week off!
You can see that the students are enjoying their Christmas fun while waiting patiently for Christmas break to arrive. This was a week that was definitely one for the books! Join me next week to find out where the Blue Devils are traveling to for the last five days of “Christmas Around the World.”
You don’t want to miss out!
