Ron Hart is the first candidate to qualify to run in a special election for mayor in Water Valley. Hart submitted his petition with 60 signatures to City Clerk Vivian Snider Monday morning.
WATER VALLEY – A special election for mayor has been scheduled for Tuesday Feb. 13. Aldermen approved the date during the monthly city meeting on Jan. 2 after declaring a vacancy in the office. Former Mayor Donald Gray tendered his resignation last month as he prepared to take office as Chancery Clerk.
Ron Hart submitted his qualifying paperwork to City Clerk Vivian Snider Monday morning, making him the first candidate to qualify. He currently serves as Ward One Alderman. He does not have to vacate the alderman seat to run in the special election. Former state representative Tommy Reynolds has also announced that he will run in the special election.
The deadline to qualify is January 24 at 5 p.m. To qualify, a candidate must submit a petition to the city clerk signed by not less than 50 qualified electors who reside in the City of Water Valley. There is no qualifying fee and candidates do not run on a party affiliation in the special election. All candidates will run as independents.
The winner of the election will serve the remainder of the four-year term that ends June 30, 2025. The mayor’s salary is $20,004 annually.
Alderman-at-large Herbie Rogers was appointed Mayor Pro Tem at the beginning of the term in 2021 and assumed duties as mayor when the position was vacated by Gray.
