Three scholarships were awarded to deserving students from the Water Valley Class of 2023 during a service on Sunday, Dec. 24 at Miles Memorial C.M.E. Church on Simmons Street in Water Valley.
Cyrus Pritchard was awarded the Butler McLeod Scholarship in honor of the late Coach McLeod, a former teacher and coach at Water Valley High School. McLeod was also a faithful member of Miles until his health failed and his subsequent death. McLeod served as a steward and trustee of the church.
Attending the service in honor of Coach McLeod were his three children, Rodrick McLeod, Detra Matthews, and Vietta Booker. Rodrick’s wife, Patsy, and Vietta’s husband, Richard, were in attendance, as well as one grandchild, Davelin Woodard.
Jasmine Wilson was awarded the Dowsing/Walton Scholarship in honor of the late Merlene Dowsing and the late Lucy Faye Walton. Both women were also faithful members of Miles until their death. They were Women’s Missionary Society members, and Walton served as Women’s Missionary Society President. Representing Walton at the service were her daughter, Sheila Hawkins, and a granddaughter, Lucinda Walton. Jasmine’s mother, Dr. Cassandra Hawkins, and her little brother, Jonathan Wilder, were also present to see Jasmine accept her scholarship.
Saveon Freeman was awarded The James Brown Save Our Sons Scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by Catherine Brown, family, and friends in honor of the late James Brown to help a male student achieve his goals of attending and graduating from college. Attending church on Sunday in honor of the late James Brown were his wife, Catherine Brown, and daughter, Jackie Williams.
Each scholarship recipient told the church congregation what the scholarship would mean to them. A family member from each scholarship being awarded also shared encouraging words on behalf of their loved ones to Cyrus, Jasmine, and Saveon.
Miles Women’s Missionary Society is the sponsor of the Butler McLeod Scholarship and the Dowsing/Walton Scholarship. Reverend Robert Hardaway is pastor at Miles.
Rubye Carr, Miles Women’s Missionary Society President, was extremely excited and honored to award these students with the scholarships.
These scholarships will be offered once again to the May, 2024, graduates. Applications will be available by February 29, 2024, in the school counselor’s office.
