It was another significant week inside the walls of Water Valley High. It was as if the walls were hugging us, making the bond of students, teachers, and faculty even closer. Though it was not a tough week, it was filled with shared emotion, love, and perseverance through the many hardships.
The bond followed the sorrowful loss of a fellow classmate and made the Water Valley High School community come together like never before to not only uphold each other during a time of despair, but also show support to her family. Senior class members of 2024 and faculty dedicated Thursday morning to a special memorial service to honor this special student, Raven Scroggins.

The Varsity powerlifting team honored senior lifter Raven Scroggins. The lifters wore one of Raven’s favorite clothing items – cowboy boots.
It was heartening to see school members wearing cowboy hats, boots, and Raven’s favorite color, blue. The memorial embraced the friendships and memories students, teachers, and family members will forever hold. At the end everyone released bright blue balloons filled with love into the sky in remembrance of a well-loved student who is truly missed.
The powerlifting team showed support by recognizing Raven as a senior lifter of the varsity girl’s powerlifting team at their regional meet Friday. Many lifters made tribute by wearing one of her favorite clothing items to the meet, cowboy boots – which Raven would, of course, never lift without. Once all scores were finalized, four Lady lifters were awarded a medal in their weight class: Natalie Hernandez, third place; Lailah Harris, third; Mya Harden, second; and Abby Ingram, third.
As for the male lifters, they traveled to Bruce High School bright and early Saturday morning to do some heavy lifting at their regional meet. Three lifters were awarded medals in their weight class: Drake Mabary, first; Jacemeron Elmore, third; and Jack Woodward, first. Congratulations to all medalists, they will advance to the North Half competition on March 8 for the girls and March 9 for the boys. Both competitions will be held at the Davidson Elementary School gymnasium. Come support the powerlifting team as they compete their way to the state-level competition!
The basketball team has been putting in the work on and off the court and it is paying off! The varsity boy’s basketball team won their first district game of the season against the Bruce Trojans. Though it was a close game, the Blue Devils balled hard point for point and ended with a victorious score of 61-59.
As for the girl’s team, their outcome was not as triumphant, but they still showed good sportsmanship and dedication as they battled the Trojans to a final score of 52-49. Both teams were awarded a trip to Rust College to watch developed basketball skills, sportsmanship and work ethic at the college level. Show your support to the basketball team and seniors as they compete against the Strayhorn Mustangs for senior night, February 2, jumping off at six o’clock in the Blue Devil gymnasium.
Twisted Circuits is the name, and robotics is the game! The Water Valley High robotics team competed this past Saturday morning at Grenada Middle School for the F.I.R.S.T. Tech Challenge Grenada Qualifier robotics competition. The squad consists of five members, Lead Programmer Nethanel Dunn, lead C.A.D. (Computer-Aided design)/Notebooking Mallory Tidwell, Head Manager Skylar Jordan, Builder Braxton Ferguson and Builder Ellie Carwile! The team ended the competition ranking second out of 16 total teams, almost advancing to the state-level competition. The squad chose Cyberdyne from Mantachie as their alliance partner and was eliminated after the second round. During awards, they received the Control Award for their excellent programming ability, which finalized the 2023-2024 twisted circuits season! Congratulations to all team members and first coach Jennifer Carwile and second coach Anna Smith for their outstanding season!
Looking back over the week, it was a meaningful return for many students but to see how such a small community can unify and transform a gloomy situation into memories filled with laughter is such a blessing to be a part of and experience in the community; thank you.
