Absentee voting is underway for the March 12 Presidential Primary in Mississippi. Yalobusha County Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney reported voters can cast an in-person absentee ballot in the circuit clerk’s offices at the Water Valley and Coffeeville courthouses during normal business hours until March 8. Both offices will also be open on Saturday, March 2, and Saturday, March 9, from 8 a.m. until noon for absentee voting. March 9 is also the deadline.
In Mississippi, registered voters are eligible to vote absentee based on age, health or work demands, or their affiliation with the U.S. Armed Forces. For example, voters who will be outside the county on election day are entitled to vote by absentee ballot.
In the primary election, voters choose either a Republican or Democratic ballot. All three races on the Democratic ballot are uncontested. Joseph R. Biden, Jr. the only candidate seeking the nomination for U.S. President. Ty Pinkins is the sole candidate for U.S. Senate and Bennie G. Thompson is unopposed for his party’s nomination for the Second Congressional District seat.
On the Republican ballot, four candidates are listed seeking the party nomination for U.S. President, but Nikki R. Haley and Donald J. Trump are the only candidates remaining in the primary. The Secretary of State’s office reported that while Vivek Ramaswamy and Ron DeSantis have both suspended their campaigns, they have not filed the necessary paperwork in Mississippi to withdraw from the ballot as required by Miss. Code Ann. Section 23-15-1095. Both candidates were notified about the requirement, the office said.
The Republican ballot also includes three candidates seeking the nomination for U.S. Senate – Ghannon Burton, Dan Eubanks and Roger F. Wicker. Three Republicans are also competing for the party nomination for the Second Congressional District representative position – Ron Eller, Andrew Scott Smith and Taylor Turcotte.
Burney also noted that Monday, February 12, is the deadline for new voters in Mississippi to register to vote in the March 12 Primary. The circuit clerk’s offices in the Water Valley and Coffeeville courthouses will also be open on Saturday, February 10, from 8 a.m. until noon for voter registration.
