WATER VALLEY – A group of Water Vallians recently organized an event to have fun and raise funds for a good cause at the same time. Friends who gather regularly at The Magnolia Coffee Company on Main Street planned an event the Friday before Super Bowl Sunday to support Compassion Food Ministries, a local organization which works to address hunger in our community.
The “Souper Bowl” soup challenge at The Magnolia Coffee Company February 9 saw eight entries of homemade creations which culminated in awards for Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice. Celebrity judges were Danny Forsyth and his wife, Sam Forsyth, as well as Clint Faust, coach of the Water Valley Blue Devils football team.
Everyone who attended the Souper Bowl challenge and tasting thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and $525 was raised from entry and tasting fees to go to Compassion Food Ministries. Magnolia Coffee Company owner Caitlin Magnuson commented about the event, “we strive to make our shop feel like home to everyone – those that need a break from the noise, those that need a warm beverage, or those that just need a listening ear. We are privileged to be able to give back in so many ways with our space and events like this just give us one more opportunity to support the community we love.”

Kent Breckenridge presents funds raised from his prepared meal sales to Danny Forsyth to support Compassion Food Ministries. Breckenridge launched a separate fundraiser to support the ministry.
Local resident Kent Breckenridge recently organized another food benefit for Compassion Food Ministries, which reflects the personal importance this cause has for him. Breckenridge has begun offering prepared meals for pick-up at The Magnolia Coffee Company, with all proceeds earmarked as donations to benefit Compassion Food Ministries. Breckenridge presented a check for $400 for recent prepared meal proceeds to Danny Forsyth, the organization’s director, at the Souper Bowl event. Breckenridge added that he plans to continue the prepared meal sales weekly benefiting Compassion Food Ministries as long as local interest and demand continues.
Forsyth gave a compelling call to action for anyone wanting to support the efforts of Compassion Food Ministries. He said many local churches provide regular monetary contributions as well as offering their time as “packers” for food boxes. He encouraged anyone wanting to join in this cause to contact him, and also asked to spread the word for those needing assistance with food needs, especially the elderly. People needing assistance should contact Forsyth to complete an application to determine eligibility.
Emcee Camille Breckenridge announced the winners of the soup competition — Judges’ Choice Michael Purvis for his Taco Soup, and Jan Stark, People’s Choice winner for her Corn Chowder.
People’s Choice winner Jan Stark summed up the evening well, “I am always happy when my culinary efforts find approval but, honestly, the highlight of the evening was learning about Compassion Food Ministries. It’s uplifting and inspiring to be reminded that there are people so devoted to making a difference in our community.”
