The long promised celebration was held last Wednesday morning. The “boys” rarely miss an opportunity and sometime along the way we decided that Tommy White should buy us all breakfast when the deal closed on selling his Main Street bank building to FNB Oxford Bank. Tommy immediately embraced the idea and it soon became a running joke, we were all going to order steak and eggs.
When I walked in the door at Dunn’s, Mrs. Paula asked me if I wanted that steak. Tommy beat us to the punch, he had already planned the steak breakfast and I must say, the boys ate good.
Sadly the Wednesday morning crew has slimmed down (I am not talking about waist lines) in numbers. We miss Sammy Anthony and a few more who have left us. Thankfully Charles Sharp joined us, even though he is not a regular on Wednesdays.
Tommy also treated everyone who came in for breakfast while we were there and his sweet wife, Linda, took plenty of pictures.

That wasn’t the only meal Tommy provided last week as the next day was the annual Water Valley football athletic banquet and he is a longtime sponsor. Tommy always calls me before the athletic banquet with a personal invitation to attend. When he called Thursday afternoon, I answered and before he could say anything, I hit him with a question.
“Mr. Tommy, I have a question. Do I need to bring my steak knife tonight?”
I already knew the answer, but figured I would have a little fun with him. For years C.W. White, Inc., BankFirst (formerly Mechanics Bank), Larson’s Cash Saver and Farm Bureau have treated the team with steaks or hamburgers, depending on the season. “Win Eight, Eat Steak” is the slogan, and last year’s season was short of the eight wins.
“Hamburgers tonight,” Tommy answered.
I must say the meal and fellowship was perfect, as was the motivational speech from Coach Dexter Ross. He challenged the players, telling them to lock in on what they want to do in life, remove obstacles that are distractions, separate from things that are holding them back and to finish strong.
Coach Ross is a strong mentor and English teacher at the high school and Coach Faust summed it up best.
“That is why I came back to Water Valley, folks like Coach Ross. He gets to see and mentor your kids every day and I can name 10 others just like him,” Faust said. “I know Oxford and Lafayette have all those fancy buildings, but your kids are in good hands in Water Valley,” Faust told the parents attending.
Reflecting on the words, it made me thankful for all of the people who have poured into my life, even those tough English teachers back in the early 1990s. It also made me think, if I had any inclination that I would wind up in the newspaper business, I probably should have paid more attention and completed my homework assignments as instructed. I hated homework, but that is a story for another day!
