This week has been a blast with back-to-back action and schedules packed like never before! You don’t want to miss the report, so grab a snack and get ready for the ride!
It started with a treat-filled Tuesday as students returned from Easter break, and the annual staff attended the (M.S.P.A.) Mississippi Scholastic Press Association on the Ole Miss campus. Students were greeted at the door with donuts and coffee and the day started with an introduction by the Journalism and New Media School Dean with the speaker lineup and agenda.
Students had breakout sessions to learn advanced-level tips and tricks to help create the very special Water Valley High School yearbook. These sessions were held at the student union and Farley Hall. Once all sessions were completed, the annual staff enjoyed a lovely lunch in Oxford before returning to school with new information for the annual.
After returning to their classes, the annual staff were busy sending out “Who’s Who” nominations. Who’s Who is made up of different categories such including Best Smile, Best Duo, Worst Driver and others. Student in each grade vote each year for their classmates. After voting was completed, the list was announced and posted throughout the school for everyone to see. The annual staff even decided to give the seniors who won a superlative their very own crown! It was a great experience, adding a little more student involvement in the school!
Powerlifting season has come to an end! Each lifter persevered through all the hardships and made it to the final competition, where they lifted like never before. The team traveled to Jackson early Thursday morning so the girls could weigh-in for their declared weight class. Before weighing in, the teams had a fun shopping day at the mall and ended their night off at a fine dining-restaurant.
The lady lifters team consisted of only three members. They reported to the Mississippi Coliseum early in the morning to prepare for their day of heavy lifting. By the end of the competition, it was evident that each member of the Lady Devils team had placed, making them fourth overall as a team with only three members! Lailah Harris earned a third place finish, Mya Harden won second and Abby Ingram also scored a third place win. The following morning, the one and only male lifter, Drake Mayberry, competed, and while the outcome was not what they hoped, he showed exquisite sportsmanship, gratitude, and respect for the sport! Congratulations to the powerlifting team for their heavy lifting at the state competition!
Saturday morning, the Interact Club hosted its second annual “Library Day for Littles” at the Blackmur Memorial Library. While this event had some early obstacles, such as rescheduling for the third time, it turned out to be a success. The Interact members had their hands full with more than double turnout compared to last year. It was good that the event landed this Saturday, only two days before the eclipse.
We explained the eclipse to the attendees and read several books on topics including the sun, moon and related subjects. They had a rocket ship coloring sheet and a fun D.I.Y. project for the craft. The kids traced their hands on green construction paper, cut them out, decorated them, and then glued them to folded silver paper plates to make aliens in UFOs.
The Interact Club would like to thank the library for helping host this event, Water Valley Rotary members Tyler Hill and Raymond Hawkins for helping guide the kids and providing crafts, and the parents for allowing their children to come for a fun outing!
The fun continued Saturday night with “Sparkle, Shimmer, and Shine!” – prom night for juniors and seniors. It was a perfect ending for a fun week at school as Blue Devil students traveled to Oxford. Before heading to their main event, students continued the prom tradition of meeting at the local bandstand where they showed off their sparkly dresses, bedazzled shoes, and glittery tuxes.
Meeting at the bandstand is also popular because not only the students show up, but also the community, family members, classmates, and younger students can view everyone’s glamorous attire and take many pictures.
After taking their selfies and final snaps, the students headed to the dance floor! This year’s prom was hosted on the rooftop of The Courtyard by Marriott in Oxford. After getting the party started, the senior class took a moment to honor their classmate, Raven Scroggins, releasing bright blue balloons (her favorite color) and singing some of her favorite country tunes. The students partied all night long and enjoyed their night out with their friends and classmates.
This week was filled with community, friends, and fun events and it makes me appreciate the positive atmosphere and the lifetime friendships that are formed at Water Valley High.
You would think the busy Blue Devils would settle down after a week of chaos, but I’m sure they will only get rowdier with just as many activities next week!

The Water Valley High School Interact Club and Water Valley Rotary Club hosted “Library Day For Littles” Saturday at Blackmur Library. The young learners enjoyed reading books about the eclipse and made crafts related to the solar system. The lesson culminated with distribution of a pair of eclipse glasses for attendees followed by a “practice round” looking at the sun in preparation for Monday’s eclipse.
