Fred Brown has enjoyed hunting and fishing all of his life and reported a great fishing trip in the Louisiana marsh catching bull redfish. The trip was the first time his wife, Imogene Brown, had fished since she was a kid. Imogene caught the biggest bull red during the outing.
WATER VALLEY – It’s not everyday that an octogenarian couple strikes out on a fishing trip in the Louisiana marsh. Fred Brown wanted to catch some bull redfish, and booked a trip with Cajun Outfitters earlier this month.
Fred and Imogene Brown embarked on a 400-mile trip to Burris, La., an outing that had been on his bucket list for years. What he didn’t anticipate was that his wife would embrace the notion and enjoy it more than he did. He also didn’t figure she would show him up.
“She put it on me,” Fred admitted.
Imogene pulled in a bull red that was 33 inches long, an inch longer than Fred’s biggest fish. They caught the limit of bull reds both days they went out, and also caught some sheephead. While the fishing was great, the experience was even better.
“My wife had such a good time, I almost cried. She really liked it,” Fred said.
Fred reported that they stayed in a big lodge, and the guide pulled the big boat up to the deck early each morning. They were able to step off the deck and into boat and ride a short distance down the highway to the boat ramp. Next the guide cranked up the big motor and off they went, almost to the edge of the Gulf.
“I haven’t seen one that big,” Fred said about the motor on the boat. “I didn’t know they made them that big. We were gone across that swamp and almost to the edge of the Gulf.”
They were back at the lodge each morning by 10:30, in time for a nice nap and a little exploring as they ventured farther south to Venice. Fred said the toughest obstacle during the trip was navigating New Orleans as he searched for Highway 23 on the map, the route that would take them alongside the Mississippi River to their destination.
“We got like three-quarters lost in Louisiana,” Fred said.
He finally stopped at a Holiday Inn, and a friendly worker programmed their destination into his iPhone.
“He said, ‘Leave it on and follow that blue arrow,” the clerk told Fred. “Zoom, off we went.”
Brown reported that he is planning a return fishing trip Thursday with his brother-in-law, R.W. Moffett, and their wives. This time he is confident that his wife will not outdo him, she is going to stay back at a hotel with her sister while the men fish.
