Summer is here and in Water Valley that means the Watermelon Carnival is just around the corner. Held annually during the first weekend in August, this event is a vibrant celebration of everything watermelon.
The Chamber of Chamber plays a pivotal role in organizing the carnival, bringing together residents and businesses to create an event that showcases the town’s unique character and hospitality. The carnival is a testament to the community’s spirit, with proceeds often going towards local projects and charities.
As carnival time approaches, you can feel the energy in the air. The streets are lined with red and green banners, and homes and businesses showcase their finest watermelon-themed decorations. For Water Valley, the Watermelon Carnival is more than just an event; it is an embodiment of fun, friendship, and joy.
Here are just a few highlights you can look forward to. Following the opening ceremonies on Friday night, the crowd will watch as 2024 Watermelon Queen Haylee Jones presides over the famous watermelon drop. She will be lifted in a bucket truck to release a watermelon that will splat on Central Street.
Music and entertainment are integral to the carnival’s charm. Friday night’s street dance and fireworks show are always crowd favorites. Saturday’s early risers can indulge in a pancake breakfast served by the Lions at the Casey Jones Railroad Museum downtown. The BankFirst 3K Walk/Run welcomes both seasoned runners and fun-loving walkers. After breakfast or the run or just looking for that first cup of coffee, you can browse the Farmers Market under the Magnolia trees in Railroad Park.
Meanwhile, back at City Park amidst the tantalizing scents of carnival food, the mouth-watering aroma of barbecue will fill the air as contestants fire up their grills for the Train Tracks Pork Attack Bar-B-Que Contest. This event features both standard and specialty MBN competitions, including whole hog, pulled pork, and ribs categories. Additional categories encompass poultry, desserts, best barbecue sauce, sides, and anything watermelon.
On Saturday, local bands perform on the gazebo throughout the day, providing a lively soundtrack of country, rock, and pop tunes adding to the festive atmosphere, ensuring there’s never a dull moment.
Another carnival highlight is the antique car parade. This vibrant procession of classic vehicles starts at Shuffield Park, travels up Main Street, circles City Park, and then returns to its starting point.
No Watermelon Carnival is complete without a touch of friendly competition. From kids showcasing their skills in the Junior Auxiliary-sponsored seed-spitting contest to the spirited rivalry among the Largest Watermelon contestants, participants of all ages are excited to set new records.
The winning melons in this contest earn more than just bragging rights and ribbons—they benefit the community. Each year, when these melons are auctioned off, the proceeds go to the Elliott Scholarship fund.
This scholarship was established to honor Joe Elliott, Jr. and Patsy Elliott Wilder for their tireless efforts in reviving the Watermelon Carnival. It is awarded to an outstanding young individual in the community, recognizing their dedication to community service.
This year marks the debut of the Youth Watermelon Growing competition, an exciting new event presented in collaboration with the Chamber and Yalobusha County 4-H. Proceeds from the auction of these melons will go towards funding future 4-H projects.
The Watermelon Carnival is a family affair, with activities designed to entertain both young and old. The carnival features bounce houses, face painting, and games, ensuring that little ones are kept busy and happy. Parents can explore the artisan market, showcasing local crafts, handmade jewelry, and, of course, watermelon-themed souvenirs.
Whether you’re a watermelon aficionado or just looking for a fun day out, the Water Valley Watermelon Carnival is the place to be. It’s a celebration of summer, community, and, of course, the beloved watermelon.
So, mark your calendars, gather your friends and family, and head to City Park for a melon-tastic time you won’t soon forget.
