It’s a Wagner Week! Jessie is visiting Chicago and writing to her little brother Eugene who is in Memphis. Jessie goes to see a famous pianist perform in concert. You can read a little about him on the internet. Jessie also delivers quite the timely line – for then and for now — in relation to politics. This must be a recurring conundrum for voters.
The University of Chicago
My dear brother,
Your letter received several days ago and was much appreciated. By this time I suppose you know some of the young people of Memphis and have begun to feel quite at home. Are you going to return to Water Valley at the beginning of September? I hope so because I want to have another little visit with you and George before you go North.
Does Miss Fernandez make you step around like she does with Dap? You know she won’t let Dap chaste kiss, even if he is her cousin. And how is Cobb? As husky as ever?
I reckon Corinne is once again more happy in the society of her beloved Miss Randolph. I’d hate for any happiness to depend so entirely upon one person, and I hope it won’t even if I marry.
I spent Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with Mr. And Mrs. Goss, who have a very beautiful home and who also have been lovely to me. Last night, we went with some people from the house to a piano recital by a Emil Liebling. He was great and I enjoyed listening to some well rendered classical music once more.
Have just returned from a lecture on “Mississippi Improvement” which I wish our worthy Alderman could have heard.
Mr. Ruscher has gone on another business trip now. I have had two letters from him already this week, though I have written none. He is most thoroughly fresh, I think.
Oh, I had my fortune told the other day, and it was simply killing. You must know that I am to be married within two years to a light-haired gentleman about my own age. Please begin to save up in time to provide the wedding present! Oh yes! And he is to be of a respectable family, neither a drunkard nor gambler. What more could you all imagine of my choice?
Wasn’t it horrid about Longino being left out as Senator! I do hope that, with the aid of the Noel faction, Crtiz may defeat Vardaman, don’t you? A figurehead would be better than a fire-eater.
Goodbye. Write soon. I’ll send you a great big share of my best love.
Did George and Dudley ever ante up with their presents? I should have sent a pipe if I had not thought George was going to donate one. You were a dear old boy to make and keep the promise about smoking and I always will love you for it. I know it must sometimes have seemed hard but I often thought of reckoning you, but I’m sure that someday you will agree with me that it was a help to you. I hope so, anyway.
Always lovingly yours,
Jess
