Welcome back to another week of Inside the Blue and White! We have now completed our first full week of being back at school, and it was certainly a good one! Students have begun to get used to the everyday schedule of waking up early and attending their different classes. Teachers have started to ease their way into their lessons, gearing up for a busy year.
Extracurricular activities have started back in full swing too! The Lady Devils volleyball team had a full week, kicking off their school season with two games. The first game was an away game versus Grenada. The team fought hard but unfortunately lost zero sets to three sets.
Next they took on Houlka at home on Thursday, and came out victorious, winning three sets to one set. We are so proud of the team and all their hard work so far.
The Beta Club has new sponsors this year, Mrs. Shayla Tedford and Mrs. Katherine Montague, and they have started the club off strong. We had our first meeting this week, where we reviewed rules and expectations about hours and behavior. We also kicked off our first fundraiser! The WVHS and WVJH Beta Clubs are currently selling J&J candles.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) started meeting this week, and are currently holding an election for officer positions. Students that participate in FCA meet on Wednesday mornings to start their day off with Christ. They also work throughout the year to sponsor different events like canned food drives, See You At The Pole, and Fields of Faith. Coach Vaughn Daniels and Coach Richard Russo help oversee FCA.
The Water Valley High School Annual Staff has had one of the busiest weeks of the year. We have accomplished so many things this week, all while introducing new members to the team. The annual staff is advised by Mrs. Anna Koshenina, and its members are as follows: Jenna Trusty, Jackson Herrera, Emma Forehand, Kristaney Reed, Mariah Wilson, Levi Bryant, Edee Henderson, Cohen Hart, Natalie Hernandez, Robert Webb, and Parker Chapman.
This week, we have shown our new members how to use our software to put together the yearbook as well as picking out our colors and fonts for this year’s edition. We also designated pages for each member to be in charge of. The group also cleaned out our Snack Shack, which is exactly what it sounds like! The money raised through Snack Shack helps the annual staff with various purchases throughout the year.
Students can come to the outback during break and purchase a treat after second period. This is a big thing among students, and we have many people who come to buy a snack everyday. Unfortunately our cooler for drinks and candy broke down at the end of last school year, and this week we finally got a new one! Not to mention our shipment of new snacks.
The Snack Shack will finally be ready for the school year on Monday. The annual staff also was able to purchase a lot of new equipment this year, much of which came in on Friday. We have new cameras, microphones, laptops, and even a green screen. This is largely because the annual staff members are expanding to also put out a monthly newsletter, the Valley Vine, and start a YouTube channel, featuring school news and fun videos with the student body.
I am very fortunate to be a part of this group of students, and I cannot wait for everyone to see what we have in store for this school year. The cheer team took a week off to adjust back to the school schedule, but worked hard this week.
We have started to prepare our material for the upcoming Meet the Devils event and scrimmage, as well as Devil Dolls camp. Devil Dolls is our mini cheerleading program for girls at Davidson Elementary. We have a camp every year to teach these girls a few cheers and sidelines, as well as a fun dance!
Then, our Devil Dolls get to perform at home games and events. We have over sixty participants signed up, and we are so excited to have them!
The team has also started to sell ads for the football program to both businesses and individuals. It is a great way for people to reach out to the community of Water Valley. As we get deeper into the school year, our weeks will start to pick up. There is so much to come in the next few weeks, I’m excited to tell you all about it.
