The Garden Club of Water Valley selected the residence of Shannon and Whitney Crow as the yard of the month for August. The home has been in the Crow family since 1980.
The Garden Club of Water Valley selected the home of Shannon and Whitney Crow on Henry Place for the August Yard of the Month.
Shannon and Whitney moved into their house in 2013. This house has been in the Crow family since 1980, and is Shannon’s childhood home.
“Over the past few years, Shannon and I have worked on renovating various areas within our home and kept putting our yard on the back burner,” Whitney reported. “Last year, I told Shannon that all I wanted for my birthday was for the front yard to be landscaped.”
The couple worked with Ethan Oswalt’s business, Professional Cut Lawncare, and they assisted us by removing the old azalea bushes and placing four ligustrum shrubs and two new azalea bushes.
“We decided to keep the original two Holly bushes and the Plantain Lilly. This spring, my mom bought us few petite rose bushes to add in, and Shannon and I bought a butterfly lavender bush,” she continued.
The hydrangea located on the left corner of the house was a gift to the couple from their Sunday school class when Shannon’s father, John Crow, passed away in March.
“I chose that specific spot since we had to remove an azalea that was given to Mrs Jane when her mother passed,” Whitney added.
Along the side of the home and the fence line connecting the home to the adjacent Crow Martin law practice building is a raised garden that is home to okra, banana peppers, bell peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
“We turned into vegetable farmers last year when Lottie placed a special request to start on,” Whitney said.
The ivy that grows along their front porch and driveway was planted by Shannon’s mother, Jane Crow. She and John lived in the house from 1980-2008.
“As for our porch, Mack Williams and his team worked diligently to strip and repaint the wood this spring,” Whitney continued.
Hanging along the porch are asparagus ferns, which are her favorite, and wooden watermelons that were painted by their three children and friends. Eight of the watermelons are painted by friends and their kids to represent some of the families that were present during the watermelon carnival breakfast that was previously held at the home.
“To close all this, I have to throw in that Shannon takes huge pride in cutting our yard. His dad was always an avid yard guy, and Shannon gained skills from him and from working with a landscaping crew in college. He has a unique eye for edging and weedeating. I’ve even offered to help with running the push mower, but the grass is his niche, so I leave him to it. We are so excited to have won yard of the month! Thank you for this honor!” Whitney added.
