WATER VALLEY – The Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce honored Dr. Harry Rayburn with a special award for his generous support of the 2024 Water Valley Carnival. Dr. Rayburn’s clinic, Water Valley Dental, sponsored the inaugural Youth Watermelon Contest, providing cash prizes, trophies and ribbons for the winners. Dr. Rayburn was also recognized for his purchase of the biggest watermelon in the Largest Watermelon Contest at this year’s Watermelon Carnival.

Dr. Harry Rayburn was surprised as he rounded the corner and spotted the Chamber crew waiting on him.
The Largest Melon Contest set two new records – one for the largest winning melon in carnival history, grown by Hal Vaughn and weighing in at 219.6 pounds; and another for the record-breaking auction bid of $2,100.
The presentation was made during a surprise ceremony Tuesday morning as his staff helped Chamber members ambush him when he arrived to work at the clinic on Main Street.
Dr. Rayburn’s remarkable purchase directly benefits the Elliott Scholarship Fund, reflecting his steadfast commitment to supporting education in the community. The Elliott Scholarship Fund, established to honor the enduring legacy of community service and dedication exemplified by Joe Elliott, Jr. and Patsy Elliott Wilder, provides $2,000 scholarships to Water Valley High School seniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership capabilities and outstanding community involvement. Dr. Rayburn’s substantial donation will help ensure that more students have the opportunity to pursue higher education, continuing the legacy of making college more accessible for a WVHS graduate.
Rayburn explained that his parents retired as school teachers, and instilled in him a strong passion for public education.
“Education is the cornerstone of a strong community,” he stated. “I believe that investing in our youth is the best way to ensure a bright future for Water Valley. The Elliott Scholarship represents that investment, and I’m proud to contribute.”
“The Chamber’s award to Dr. Rayburn stands as a tribute to his generosity and commitment to education,” reports Chamber president Angie Hodge. “His contribution helps ensure that the Elliott Scholarship Fund will continue to provide opportunities for future generations of students in Water Valley, paving the way for a brighter future.”
