It’s been another week in the Valley, and it truthfully hasn’t been the most eventful. Other than sports, students have just had a regular week full of academics. It was a short week, with students and teachers alike getting Monday off for the Labor Day holiday. I personally spent my day out by the pool, hanging out with friends and family.

Kalaila Folson graduated from Water Valley High School in May and joined the Army National Guard. Folson attended basic combat training this summer and will attend the University of Mississippi in the spring as a member of the ROTC program.
Seniors are gearing up for college applications, but senior teacher Coach Michael Howland has stressed that college is not the only path after high school. Water Valley High School alumna (and one of my best friends) Kalaila Folson, is a prime example of this.
Kalaila graduated with the Class of 2024, and has chosen a combination of paths. She has turned towards the military, becoming a member of the Army National Guard. In the summer before her senior year, Folson attended basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. She chose this path because during her junior year, she was undecided with what she wanted to do in life following high school. She ended up choosing to follow in her father’s footsteps and join the army. Kalaila just returned from AT in Fort Gregg-Adams in Virginia, completing her summer of military training.
She will attend the University of Mississippi in the spring as a member of the ROTC program to further her military career. She says that
“Since joining the Army I’ve displayed leadership skills, discipline, and a sense of purpose,” she said.
It was a very busy week for our student athletes. On Tuesday, our junior high and junior varsity football teams took on the Lafayette Commodores at Lafayette. The seventh grade and junior varsity teams fell short against the Dores, but the eighty grade team came home with a big win! We are so proud of the eighth graders and the work they are putting in this season.
The Lady Devils volleyball team faced Grenada on Tuesday, losing all three sets.
The Blue Devil golf team played at home (Yalobusha Country Club) against Houlka and Lafayette, and finished second. Bayleigh Camp led the girls team with a 58.
Cheerleaders sacrificed some free time during their lunch breaks at school to create signs. These signs get hung up around the football field in an effort to boost a little bit more school spirit. A big thanks to Mrs. Ashley Watts for letting us use her supplies and space when she is not busy to create these signs. She always welcomes us in and provides us with what we need.
We had intended to put on a pep rally for students to enjoy on Friday to celebrate another week of Blue Devil football, however that was rescheduled to the upcoming week as football was moved to Thursday. This scheduling change certainly made our Thursday jam-packed for Water Valley sports.
The golf team also played at Mallard Point against Lafayette and Houston and finished second. Senior Maverick French shot the best with a 42.
Volleyball also faced Ingomar at home, but they suffered an unfortunate loss. The Falcons beat the Blue Devils in all three sets. They have a busy week coming up and will work hard to grow from this loss.
The high school football program took on the North Pontotoc Vikings at home. From the first kickoff to halftime, the game remained close, with both teams giving it their best effort.
In the second half, though, the Vikings pulled ahead and left the Blue Devils unable to come back for the win.
They will face off in another home game versus Baldwyn this week. With a pep rally and yet another game at Bobby Clark field, next week will be eventful and you all will hear all about it.
