Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! It’s been a busy week here at WVHS, and I have a lot to tell you all about. To start off our week, seniors celebrated college application day with somewhat of a spirit week put together by our school counselor, Mr. Jonathan Barnes. On Monday, we wore our senior jerseys and Water Valley gear in recognition of how it all starts here at WVHS. We will graduate from Water Valley before we embark on our adult life.
On Tuesday, we dressed for success in preparation for professional appearances. Students practiced appropriate business attire as well as professional etiquette in the workplace. This involved students rehearsing greetings and handshakes, as well as reviewing how to write an adequate e-mail.
Lastly, on Wednesday seniors dressed up in their college gear for application day! We started the day with a presentation from the Balfour company. This is who we buy our cap and gowns from, as well as other neat senior gear.
Northwest Mississippi Community College and the University of Mississippi both had presentations prepared for seniors. These presentations covered information about admissions, financial aid, student life, and so much more. We ended application day with the main event: applying to our top three colleges.

Seniors selected colleges to apply to during a spirit week organized by Water Valley High School counselor Jonathan Barnes.
Students selected three colleges to apply to with the help of Mr. Barnes. Then we got to sign our certificates displaying the schools we had applied to.
Big thank you to Mr. Barnes, Mrs. Arman (NWCC), Mr. Coleman (Ole Miss) and everyone else who helped put this week together!
The ballots are finally in and students have selected the 2024 fairytale homecoming court! Members of the court are senior maids Deneshia Spearman, Takesi Hervey, Elise Turner and Mariya Morgan; junior maids Kristaney Reed and Megan Willingham; sophomore maid Payton Darby; and freshman maid Bentlee Tucker. These young ladies will represent their classes during homecoming week by dressing up for spirit days, riding in the homecoming parade, and getting dressed up and presented at the homecoming football game.
One of the four senior maids will be chosen as the 2024 homecoming queen, voted on by each student at Water Valley High School. The outgoing homecoming queen, Miss Mya Harden, will be present to pass on the crown at the game on October 4th.
I encourage you all to attend!
Hurricane Francis made landfall last week, and we were set to have a lot of nasty weather. The school district felt that for everyone’s safety, it would be best to cancel school for Thursday. As you can imagine, students were ecstatic to get a day off. I spent my day off babysitting and hanging out with friends.
Many other students spent the day catching up on sleep, completing dual enrollment assignments, or working hard at their jobs. It is definitely nice to have a random day off.
As always, it was a busy week for Blue Devil athletics. On Monday night, the Lady Devils volleyball team traveled to Batesville to take on the North Delta Green Waves. The team put up a good fight but lost 1-3 sets. Each match was extremely close. The girls also played Ingomar at Ingomar High School. The game ended 0-3 sets in favor of Ingomar.
Regardless of their losses this week, the volleyball team has improved by leaps and bounds and will continue to do so for the rest of the season.
The junior high and junior varsity football teams played the Jaguars from J.Z. George at home on Tuesday night. The Blue Devils dominated, with the seventh grade team winning 28-0, eighth grade team winning 30-0, and junior varsity winning 12-0. These teams have been putting in the work at practice and it is certainly starting to pay off.
The varsity team faced the Baldwyn High School Bearcats at home on Friday night. With murky weather leaving the field wet and muddy, it was sure to be an interesting game. The Devils fought hard, but fell to the Bearcats 7-27.
Catch them on the road for the first time this week as they take on Eupora at Eupora High School. We’ve had so much going on so far but there is lots more to come in the next few weeks. Read all about it in coming editions of “Inside The Blue And White.”
