The Water Valley High School homecoming court was announced by the school last week. The maids include (front row, from left) sophomore Payton Darby, freshman Bentlee Tucker and juniors Megan Willingham and Kristaney Reed; and seniors (back row) Takeshi Hervey, Mariya Morgan, Deneshia “Bree” Spearman and Elise Turner. Homecoming will be held October 4.
WATER VALLEY – Home-coming at Water Valley High School is just over two weeks away and planning has been underway for months to make it a memorable event with the addition of a parade on Thursday, October 3. Water Valley High School Principal Dr. Vickie Person reported a committee started parade preparations at the end of the last school year.
The parade will roll from Crawford Sports Complex on the south end of the city to First Baptist Church starting at 5:30 p.m. A pep rally will follow in City Park. The parade theme is “Blue and White Pride” and organizers are asking students, alumni, businesses, churches and everyone in the community to get involved.
Water Valley High School coach Chris Yancy, one of the committee members helping with the parade, recalled homecoming parades when he was a junior high student.
“We did it two years in a row and it just stopped,” Yancy said. “I bleed Blue and White, when I was in school we were excited about pep rallies, we were excited about going to games, we excited about hearing the band play. We want our students to see that so one day they can tell their kids about it.”
Lineup starts at 5 p.m. and pre-registration is required. All vehicles must be street legal and there is no entry fee. Vehicles must have signage.
“A homecoming queen or whatever the case may be, we want there to be signage to show who is in the parade,” Person explained.
Yancy reported that team members from former state championship teams, homecoming queens and others have been invited to participate. Others who have committed include the sheriff’s department, police department, fire department and ambulances.
“We are asking the community to show up, to cheer, to participate if you can, Person said.
The homecoming game will follow on Friday, October 4 as the Blue Devils host Saltillo with festivities that include the presentation of the homecoming court and crowning the queen.
